Zhen Luan
Zhen Luan (甄鸾) (535 – 566) was a Chinese mathematician, astronomer, daoist and buddhist who was active during the Northern Zhou (557-581) of the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. Born in the Wuji County of the present day Hubei Province, he is primarily known for the comments on the ancient mathematical treatises. Proceeding from them, he paid special attention to the "Nine Palaces" calculation technique; his description of the Luo shu represents an early example of textual comment on this scheme. Zhen Luan developed the Tianhe calendar which was implemented in 566 and was current for the next 18 years. Zhen trained in a Daoist congregation, but converted to Buddhism out of disgust with Daoist sexual practices. He wrote the anti-Daoist text '' Xiaodao Lun'' in 570 for Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou. Zhou (), known in historiography as the Northern Zhou (), was a Xianbei-led Dynasties in Chinese history, dynasty of China that lasted from 557 to 581. One of the Northern and Southern dynasties#Northern dynasties, Northern dynasties of China's Northern and Southern dynasties period, it succeeded the Western Wei, Western Wei dynasty and was eventually overthrown by the Sui dynasty. The Northern and Southern dynasties () was a period of political division in the history of China that lasted from 420 to 589, following the tumultuous era of the Sixteen Kingdoms and the Eastern Jin dynasty. It is sometimes considered as the latter part of a longer period known as the Six Dynasties (220–589). The period featured civil war and political chaos, but was also a time of flourishing arts and culture, advancement in technology, and the spread of Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. Schuyler Van Rensselaer Cammann (February 2, 1912, in New York City – September 9, 1991, in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire) was an anthropologist best known for work in Asia. Early life Cammann was born on February 2, 1912, in New York City. He was the son of Herbert Schuyler Cammann (1884–1965) and Katharine Van Rensselaer Fairfax (1888–1978). His father, a great-grandson of Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat, was involved in real estate and insurance business he established in 1907.
