Zhao Yannian
Zhao Yannian (; July 1929 – 18 October 2019) was a Chinese politician. An ethnic Hui, he served as Vice Minister of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission from 1986 to 2003. Biography Zhao Yannian was born in July 1929 in Nanzhao County, Henan, Republic of China. He was a member of the Hui ethnic group. Zhao joined the Communist Party of China in March 1950. From 1954, he served as deputy magistrate and county magistrate of Nanyang County. In 1958, he was transferred to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, where he served as deputy director of the Policy Research Office, deputy director of the Office of the Party Committee, and deputy director of the Rural Work Office of the Party Committee. Zhao was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution. After his political rehabilitation, he served as director of the Policy Research Office of the Ningxia Party Committee in April 1978. Zhao (surname)
Zhao (; ) is a Chinese-language surname, means “walk quickly” and “jump” in ancient Chinese, and is the 1st surname in the famous Hundred Family Surnames – the traditional list of all Chinese surnames – because it was the emperor's surname of the Song Dynasty (960–1279) when the list was compiled. The first line of the poem is in the line 趙錢孫李 (Zhao, Qian, Sun, Li). Zhao is now ranking as the 7th most common surname in China and carried mainly by people of Mandarin-speaking regions. Zhao may be romanized as "Chiu" from the Cantonese pronunciation, and is romanized in Taiwan and Hong Kong as " Chao" as in the Wade–Giles system. It is cognate with the Vietnamese family name "Triệu" and with the Korean family name most commonly romanized as "Cho" (조). Hui People
The Hui people ( zh, c=, p=Huízú, w=Hui2-tsu2, Xiao'erjing: , dng, Хуэйзў, ) are an East Asian ethnoreligious group predominantly composed of Chinese-speaking adherents of Islam. They are distributed throughout China, mainly in the northwestern provinces and in the Zhongyuan region. According to the 2011 census, China is home to approximately 10.5 million Hui people. The 110,000 Dungan people of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are also considered part of the Hui ethnicity. The Hui have a distinct connection with Islamic culture. For example, they follow Islamic dietary laws and reject the consumption of pork, the most commonly consumed meat in China, and have developed their own variation of Chinese cuisine.
