Zhanaarka (; ) —until 2020 ''Atasu'', is a settlement in Zhanaarka District, Ulytau Region, Kazakhstan. It is the administrative center of the district and the only populated center of the Atasu rural district (KATO code - 354430100). Population: Geography Zhanaarka is located to the northeast of Zhezkazgan city, by the confluence of the Sarysu (river), Sarysu and Zhaman Sarysu rivers. Zhaman Sarysu
The Zhaman Sarysu () is a river in the Zhanaarka District, Ulytau Region, and Shet District, Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan. It has a length of and a drainage basin of .Google Earth It is one of the most important tributaries of the Sarysu. The city of Zhanaarka is located to the east of the mouth of the river. The valley is used as pasture for local cattle. Course The Zhaman Sarysu river originates in the southern slopes of the Zhaksy Tagyly massif of the Kazakh Uplands, with some rivulets flowing from the Shetshok and Baynazar mountains. In its upper course it heads first southwestwards within a channel bound by steep cliffs. After it leaves the mountain area it bends roughly westwards and its channel gradually widens reaching a width between s and . Ulytau Region (; ) is a region of Kazakhstan. The administrative center of the region is the city of Jezkazgan. The area split off from Karaganda Region in 2022. The region's borders roughly correspond to the western half of the old Jezkazgan Region which was liquidated in 1997 and merged with Karaganda Region. Sarysu (river)
The Sarysu (, ''Sarysu''; , ''Sarysu'') is a river in Karaganda, Ulytau, Turkistan, and Kyzylorda Regions of Kazakhstan. It is long, and has a drainage basin of . The name ''sary su'' means ''yellow water'' in Turkic languages. Course It arises above Zhanaarka and flows generally westward towards Kzyl-Dzhar where it turns south-westward past Birlestik and Zhanabas, then heading ever-more southerly it ends in the Telikol, across a cluster of small intermittent lakes at the western end of the Ashchykol Depression and to the east of the Dariyaly plain. Koktinkoli
Koktinkoli (; ) is a lake in Shet District, Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan. Zhanaarka, former Atasu, is located to the northwest of the lake, and Koktinkoli station to the northeast of the northern lakeshore. The border with Ulytau Region lies to the west of the western lakeshore. Geography Koktinkoli is an exorheic lake in the Sarysu basin. River Zhaman Sarysu flows into the lake from the northeast and flows out of it from the north. The lake is roughly triangular-shaped, with its vertex in the north. The western shore is steep, lined with cliffs up to high, and consists of gray sandstone mixed with clay. The remaining stretches of the lakeshore are flat and clayey. An earthen dam was built to regulate the water level at the northern and northeastern end, where the river flows in and out. Zhezkazgan, or Jezkazgan ( ) is a city and the administrative centre of Ulytau Region, Kazakhstan.
