Zenith Records
Zenith Records is a vinyl record pressing plant based in Melbourne, Australia, established in 2005. Overview Zenith was founded by Australian artist Pegz, owner of Obese Records, who purchased and fixed the pressing machinery so that it was on par with international pressing plants. The machinery at Zenith had originated at Nick Phillips' Corduroy Records pressing plant which was sold to Zenith Records in 2005. Their pressing plants had been in Australia for decades as part of record labels like Modern and Sundown, but have since been refurbished. Originally located in Richmond, the plant relocated to East Brunswick in 2013. The label is now run by co-owner Paul Rigby. Zenith has three Alpha-Toolex record presses in operation, a Neumann record cutting lathe, as well as its own record matrix-making facilities. Pegz
Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records—the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B. Biography Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers. Pegz has been a part of the Australian hip hop scene since 1992, and has released four full-length studio albums. As a teenager he was first a graffiti artist before becoming a rapper. In 2000, he got a job at Obese Records, a specialist hip-hop music store in Prahran, Victoria, Prahran. Obese Records
Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management. History Founding as OB's record store Obese Records was founded in 1995 as a small record store called OB's by Ollie Bobbitt, in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran. Specialising in hip hop music, the store changed its name to "Obese Records" after Bobbitt sold the business to Shazlek One. Corduroy Records
Corduroy Records was a vinyl record pressing plant and record label that existed from 1994–2005 in Highett, Victoria, Australia. The Corduroy pressing plant was established by Nick Phillips of the garage rock band The Breadmakers who saved Australia’s only vinyl pressing plant from the scrap dealers in Sydney and had it relocated to Highett, Victoria. Staff members of Corduroy included several people who were active in Australian bands and record labels, including Mikey Young and Brendan Huntley of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Guy Blackman of Chapter Music, Richard Stanley of Aarght Records, Mark Nelson of The Stabs and Saucerlike Records, Conrad Standish of The Devastations, Shaun Gionis of Boomagates, Brendan Webb of Sandpit, Kellie Laing of Wig Wam Records, and Kim Walvisch of Humber Records. Record Press
A record press is a machine for manufacturing vinyl records. It is essentially a hydraulic press fitted with thin nickel stampers which are negative impressions of a master disc. Labels and a pre-heated vinyl patty (or "biscuit") are placed in a heated mold cavity. Two stampers are used, one for each of side of the disc. The record press closes under a pressure of about 150 tons. The process of compression molding forces the hot vinyl to fill the grooves in the stampers, and take the form of the finished record.
