Zelma O’Neal
Zelma O'Neal (May 29, 1903 – November 3, 1989) was an American actress, singer, and dancer in the 1920s and 1930s. She appeared on Broadway and in early sound films, including the Paramount Pictures films '' Paramount on Parade'' and '' Follow Thru'' (both 1930). Biography She was born in Rock Falls, Illinois, on May 29, 1903, and moved to Chicago at the age of two. She attended public schools until she was fourteen, when she went to work in a factory and later took office jobs. She worked occasionally in vaudeville, at first without pay and later professionally as a vaudeville act with her sister Berenice and a piano player. Her touring brought her to the East Coast, where she was cast in '' Good News''. Of her appearance in that musical comedy set on a college campus, Brooks Atkinson wrote in ''The New York Times'' in 1927: "one pert young freshman, Zelma O'Neal, dances herself into willing exhaustion to the snapping tune of 'The Varsity Drag'." Dorothy Lee (born Marjorie Elizabeth Millsap, May 23, 1911 – June 24, 1999) was an American actress and comedian during the 1930s. She appeared in 28 films, usually appearing alongside the comedy team of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey. Biography Born in Los Angeles, Marjorie Elizabeth Millsap was the daughter of Homer and Bess Millsap. Her father was an attorney in Los Angeles. She became an actress known as Dorothy Lee. Albert Hirschfeld (June 21, 1903 – January 20, 2003) was an American caricaturist best known for his black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. Early life and career Al Hirschfeld was born in 1903 in a two-story duplex apartment at 1313 Carr Street in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Isaac, was a German Jewish traveling salesman, while his mother Rebecca was from a family of strict, Russian Orthodox Jews; his maternal grandparents refused to eat in his parents' non-kosher home. Hirschfeld described how the family would not permit bread in the house during Passover, and during this time the family would eat matzah and ham sandwiches. He moved with his family to New York City in 1915, where he received art training at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design.
