Zeedijk (Amsterdam)
Zeedijk (''English'': "Sea dike") is a street in the old centre of Amsterdam. The street is the northern and eastern boundary of De Wallen red-light district and runs between Prins Hendrikkade and Nieuwmarkt. Historically an area riddled with crime and drug addicts, the area went through a revitalization and is now the main street of Amsterdam's Chinatown, where locals come to eat at Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese restaurants. The Zeedijk neighbourhood is also known as the Nautical Quarter (Dutch: ''Nautisch Kwartier'') because of its past as a sailors' neighbourhood. Kees Van Beijnum
Kees van Beijnum (born 21 March 1954 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch writer. He grew up in Amsterdam, where his mother had a bar near the Zeedijk. Before he became a writer, he was a journalist. He made his debut as a novelist in 1991 with ''Over het IJ'', a non-fiction novel about a murder case in Amsterdam. The novel ''De ordening'', published in 1998, was based on the life of Florentine Rost van Tonningen (1914–2007), a Dutch national-socialist who stood by her beliefs until her death. The book was adapted to film and was nominated for a Golden Calf award in 2003. He received the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prijs in 2001 for ''De Oesters van Nam Kee'' ("Oysters at Nam Kee's"), which was also longlisted for the Libris Prize. Bet Van Beeren
Bet van Beeren (12 February 1902—16 July 1967) was a flamboyant, legendary bar owner in Amsterdam. While hers was not the first bar that allowed LGBT persons to openly associate, the fact that she was openly lesbian, and accepting of a very diverse clientele, led her establishment to be one of the most known. In 2017, she was honored by the city of Amsterdam when a canal bridge was renamed in her honor. Early life Elisabeth Maria van Beeren was born on 12 February 1902 in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam to Maria Johanna (née Brants) and Johannes Hendrik van Beeren. He Hua Temple
Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple (, or simply He Hua Temple, is a Buddhist temple located at Zeedijk 106–118, Chinatown in Amsterdam. It is the largest Buddhist temple built in the traditional Chinese palace style in Europe. The temple is part of the Fo Guang Shan, and the BLIA. It is also the first Chinese Buddhist temple building in Europe. History At the end of Zeedijk street, right before Nieuwmarkt was originally a convent for nuns which was founded in 1475.
