Zebulon Baird was an American politician who served in the North Carolina Senate. Biography Baird was a wealthy slave owner and farmer in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He operated a ferry crossing service on the French Broad River and owned a merchant store in Asheville. Zebulon Baird Vance (May 13, 1830 – April 14, 1894) was the 37th and 43rd governor of North Carolina, a U.S. Senator from North Carolina, and a Confederate officer during the American Civil War. A prolific writer and noted public speaker, Vance became one of the most influential Southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods. The North Carolina Senate is the upper chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly, which along with the North Carolina House of Representatives—the lower chamber—comprises the state legislature of North Carolina. Burnsville, North Carolina
Burnsville is a town that serves as the county seat of Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. History The town was founded on March 6, 1834, from land conveyed by John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey, and it was named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812. In 1909, a statue of Captain Burns was given to the town by his grandson, Walter Francis Burns Sr., and it was set on a granite pedestal in the center of the town square. It has an inscription that reads, in part, "He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him." Due to damages, the original statue was replaced in the early 2000s. Colonel David Vance was an American soldier during the Revolutionary War. Personal life Vance was born near Winchester, Virginia, circa 1745, the oldest son of Samuel Vance and descended from the DeVaux family in Normandy. The name Vance is a corruption of DeVaux. Around 1774 he settled on the Catawba River in Rowan County, later Burke County, and married there, Priscilla Brank, daughter of Robert Brank.
