Jurji Zaydan
Jurji Zaydan ( ar, جرجي زيدان, ; December 14, 1861 – July 21, 1914) was a prolific Lebanese novelist, journalist, editor and teacher, most noted for his creation of the magazine '' Al-Hilal'', which he used to serialize his twenty three historical novels. His primary goal, as a writer and intellectual during the Nahda, was to make the common Arabic population know their own history through the entertaining medium of the novel. He has enjoyed a widespread popularity. He is also considered to have been one of the first thinkers to help formulate the theory of Arab nationalism. Early life Jurji Zaydan was born on December 14, 1861 in Beirut to an Eastern Orthodox Christian family of limited means. His father owned a restaurant and, being illiterate and uneducated himself, placed little importance on education. Banu Zaydan
Al-Zayadina (singular: Zaydani or Zidany, also called the Banu Zaydan) were an Arab clan based in the Galilee. They were best known after one of their sheikhs (chiefs) Zahir al-Umar, who, through his tax farms, economic monopolies, popular support, and military strength ruled a semi-autonomous sheikhdom in northern Palestine and adjacent regions in the 18th century.Joudah, 1987, p. 19. Ibn Zaydan
Abd al-Rahman ibn Zaydan () (June 1873 – 1946) was a Moroccan historian and literary author.E. J. van Donzel, ''Islamic Desk Reference: Compiled from the Encyclopaedia of Islam'', ed. Amina Zaydan
Amina Zaydan (born 1966) is an Egyptian novelist and short story writer. She was born in 1966 in Suez and now lives in Cairo where she works as a civil servant. Zaydan is known for her strong stand on gender inequality in her writings. In 1994, her short story collection entitled ''It Happened Secretly'' won first prize in a literary competition held by Gamal al-Ghitani's ''Akhbar al-Adab'' weekly newspaper. It also won the prize for Best Short Story Collection at the Cairo International Book Fair the following year. She has since published a further volume of short stories called ''Fawda'' and several novels. Her second novel ''Red Wine'' won the Naguib Mahfouz Medal in 2007.
