Zarcero (canton)
Zarcero is a canton in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. Hiking trails, pure water creeks, friendly people, landscapes and natural attractions are features of the area. Toponymy The name means an abundance of the elmleaf or thornless blackberry plant, in Spanish called . It was originally given the name "Alfaro Ruiz" in remembrance of Juan Alfaro Ruíz, a hero from the National Campaign of 1856, or Filibuster War. The head city of the canton is the eponymous Zarcero district. History Zarcero was created on 21 June 1915 by decree 27. Geography Zarcero has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. To the north, the region borders canton San Carlos, to the south it borders canton Naranjo, to the east it borders canton Sarchí and to the west it borders the canton San Ramón. Cantons Of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is administratively divided into seven provinces which are subdivided into 83 cantons, and these are further subdivided into districts. Cantons are the only administrative division in Costa Rica that possess local government in the form of municipalities. Each municipality has its own mayor and several representatives, all of them chosen via municipal elections every four years. The original 14 cantons were established in 1848, and the number has risen gradually by the division of existing cantons. Law no. 4366 of 19 August 1969, which outlines the creation of administrative divisions of Costa Rica, states that new cantons may only be created if they have at least one percent of the republic's total population, which was as of the last census (2011). Zarcero
Zarcero is a district of the Zarcero canton, in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. History Zarcero was granted the title of "ciudad" (city) by a law on 24 July 1918. Geography Zarcero has an area of km² and an elevation of metres. It is located in the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range) of Costa Rica, 50 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital city of Alajuela and 27 kilometers southeast of Ciudad Quesada. Cucurbita Ficifolia
''Cucurbita ficifolia'' is a species of squash, grown for its edible seeds, fruit, and greens. It has common names including Asian pumpkin, black seed squash, chilacayote, cidra, fig-leaf gourd, and Malabar gourd. Compared to other domesticated species in its genus, investigators have noted that samples of ''C. ficifolia'' from throughout its range are relatively similar to one other in morphology and genetic composition. Variations do occur in fruit and seed color, some isozymes, and photoperiod sensitivity. This species is grown widely from Argentina and Chile to Mexico. It is also cultivated in regions of the world including India, Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Angola. No named agricultural cultivars have been recognized.
