Evangelos Zappas
Evangelos or Evangelis Zappas (23 August 1800 – 19 June 1865) was a Greek philanthropist and businessman who is recognized today as one of the founders of the modern Olympic Games, which were held in 1859, 1870, 1875, and 1888 and preceded the Olympic Games that came under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. These Zappas Olympics, Games, known at the time simply as ''Olympics'' (), came before the founding of the International Olympic Committee itself. The legacy of Zappas, as well as the legacy of his cousin Konstantinos Zappas, Konstantinos, was also used to fund the Olympic Games of 1896. During his youth, Zappas joined the Greek War of Independence (1821–1832), achieving the rank of Major and fighting in several significant battles. Following Greek independence, he moved to Wallachia where he spent most of his life and had a successful career as a businessman, becoming one of the richest men of that time in Eastern Europe. Zappas Olympics
The Zappas Olympics (), simply called Olympics (, ''Olympia'') at the time, were a series of athletic events held in Athens, Greece, in 1859, 1870 and 1875, sponsored by Greek businessman Evangelis Zappas. These games were one of the first revivals of the ancient Olympic Games in the modern era. Their success provided further inspiration for William Penny Brookes in England, whose games had been running since 1850, and the International Olympic Committee series from 1896. Zappas' contribution in this process was vital: not only were the games hosted at his own initiative, he also provided the funds for the staging of the games, as well as for the construction of much-needed infrastructure, including the refurbishment of the ancient Panathenaic Stadium, which hosted the Games of 1870 and 1875. Konstantinos Zappas
Konstantinos Zappas (; 1814–1892) was a Greek entrepreneur and national benefactor who together with his cousin, Evangelos Zappas, played an essential role in the revival of the Olympic Games. Biography Zappas was born in 1814 in the village of Labova e Madhe, between Gjirokastër and Tepelenë (modern Albania), then in the Ottoman Empire. He was of Greek, Aromanian or Albanian descent. After the death of Evangelos Zappas, he became the executor of his cousin's legacy and the ongoing revival of the Olympic Games. He was appointed manager of the Olympic Committee that organised the so-called Zappas Olympics, a Greek athletic festival held in 1859, 1870 and 1875 and the forerunner of the modern international Olympics. In 1881, after the annexation of Thessaly to Greece, he bought extended estates there and the following years contributed to the building of the Zappeion building in Athens, which was officially opened on 28 October 1888. Petros Zappas
Petros Zappas () was an entrepreneur and politician and a member of the Zappas family of national benefactors originally from Labovë of Greek or Aromanian descent. This village would later form part of the short-lived Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus. In World War I, during Greek administration between October 1914 and September 1916, Petros Zappas was elected as member of the Greek Parliament for the Argyrokastron Prefecture (1915–1917) in the December 1915 elections.
