Zakapa
Zakapa, also known as Jacopa, was a Mizo chieftain of the Fanai clan and ruled the Vanlaiphai villages in present-day southern Mizoram, India. He is best known for his participation in the Lushai Rising. Early life Zakapa was a descendant of Rorehlova, who established the Fanai chiefs and cooperated with Lallula. Rorehlova's eldest son Aithangvunga was Zakapa's grandfather. Aithangvunga's son Dokhama would move from Keltan to Khawhri. Zakapa would be born to Dokhama and become chief of Khawri in 1864. The villages of Cherhhlun, Lungkawih, Tuichang, Airthur and Tuipui would all become under his rule. He was born to three brothers, Zaduna, Lianchema and Pazika. He was the third son of Dokhama and brother to Zaduna, Lianchema and Pazika. Lushai Rising
The Lushai Rising was the conflict between the British and the Lushai chiefs in 1890-1895, which began following the annexation of the Lushai Hills after the Chin-Lushai Expedition. It concerned the Western chiefs, the Eastern chief and Southern chiefs separately at different intervals. By 1895, the Lushai resistance and rising was considered over. Background The annexation of the Lushai Hills saw punitive expeditions with a new goal to annex the Lushai Hills and establish a garrison to control the raiding of the Lushai tribes. However, after the expedition ended in April 1890, not all Lushai chiefs supported the annexation and influential chiefs formed organized resistances as a result. Charles Stewart Murray
Charles Stewart Murray (4 December 1858- 4 May 1903) was a superintendent of police in the British Raj. Murray participated in the Chin-Lushai Expedition. Murray assisted John Shakespear, the field officer of the southern column in the expedition. After the annexation of the Lushai Hills, Murray was assigned as the first superintendent of the South Lushai Hills. However, his mishandling of authority with the Lushai tribes, such as Zakapa, and his demands for sexual corvée would see him transferred to an assistant commissioner of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Mizo People
The Mizo people, (historically called the Lushais) are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group primarily from Mizoram in northeastern India with communities beyond Mizoram, living in neighboring northeast Indian states like Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, with minority populations also found in Myanmar and the United States. Mizoram is the most literate state in India, and the first to become fully literate. Rorehlova
Rohrelova was a Mizo chief of the Fanai ( Lai) clan in the 18th century of the Lushai Hills. He is described as one of the greatest Fanai kings. He is most well-known for his participation in the Thlanrawn massacre led by Lallula. He is the ancestor of Zakapa, who led the Lushai Rising against the British. Early life Rorehlova was born to Chhanruanga, a Fanai chief. He had a brother named Chhunhleia. His father, Chhanruanga, possessed a sizeable village but was attacked and killed by the Thlanrawn. His brother Chhunhleia was killed soon after when attacking the Thlawnrawn for revenge. Rorehlova would be harassed by his relatives who wished to take chieftainship for themselfin his young age. Chin-Lushai Expedition
The Chin-Lushai Expedition of 1889–90 was a British punitive expedition in Myanmar, Burma and India against the tribes of the Chin Hills and Lushai Hills. Background Following the Lushai Expedition, Lushai Expedition of 1871–72, the border regions of Burma and India remained relatively peaceful with few raids occurring. Ropuiliani
Ropuiliani (1828–3 January 1895) was the first recorded Mizo Queen in history during British colonial rule in the Lushai Hills. She is remembered for her resistance against British colonial forces after the death of her husband, Vandula. She was the Queen for Denlung and eight other villages, near present-day Hnahthial in Mizoram. She died in confinement at a prison in Rangmati, Bangladesh on 3 January 1895. Reign Ropuiliani was the daughter of Lalsavunga, the chief of Aizawl, and was born and raised in present-day Mizoram Governor Compound, Mizoram.
