Zagreb Film
Zagreb Film is a Croatian film company principally known for its animation studio. From Zagreb, it was founded in 1953. They have produced hundreds of animated films, as well as documentaries, television commercials, educational films and several feature films. Zagreb Film produced the cartoon series ''Professor Balthazar'' (), created by Zlatko Grgić, about an amusing professor who solved various imaginative problems. Another popular cartoon of theirs was ''Inspektor Maska, Inspector Mask'' (). History Zagreb Film was founded in 1953 with the main profile of an animated films production company. Since then, more than 600 animated films, 14 feature films, about 600 documentaries and 800 commercials as well as 600 educational films were produced in this studio. The company operates at three locations; one with ateliers for artists, shooting equipment, small theater and one with film warehouse, video multiplication room and administration. Inspektor Maska
(English: ''Inspector Mask'') is a Croatian and Yugoslav animation, animated comedy television series produced for television by Zagreb Film that ran from 1962 to 1963. Development The idea for the series originated from the 1959 animated short ''Inspektor se vratio kući'', directed by Vatroslav Mimica, which was particularly well received. Synopsis The story takes place in an unnamed American metropolis of the 1960s, where a criminal gang led by ''Prehlađeni Joe'' (Runny Nose Joe or Sneezy Joe) carries out various criminal acts, but is thwarted by police inspektor Maska, using various disguises to track them and catch them in the end. Zagreb ( ) is the capital (political), capital and List of cities and towns in Croatia#List of cities and towns, largest city of Croatia. Georges Sadoul
Georges Sadoul (; 4 February 1904 – 13 October 1967) was a French film critic, journalist and cinema writer. He is known for writing encyclopedias of film and filmmakers, many of which have been translated into English. Biography Sadoul was born in Nancy. His father, Charles Sadoul, was a well-known ethnologist. At the age of 19, a student in Nancy, he collaborated with '' L'Est Républicain'' and founded the Nancy-Paris Committee. ''Tup Tup'' is a 1972 Yugoslav animated short by Nedeljko Dragić at Zagreb Film animation studio, in cooperation with Corona Cinematografica in Italy. Plot A man is trying to go to sleep but a noise keeps him up. In the process of trying to stop the noise, he exposes a bizarre mixture of sounds and images. Accolades It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, but lost to Richard Williams (animator), Richard Williams' A Christmas Carol (TV special), take on ''A Christmas Carol''. ''The Wall'' () is a 1966 Yugoslav animated short film by Ante Zaninović for Zagreb Film. Synopsis A naked, long haired man makes multiple attempts to tackle a high brick was that stands in his way, possibly an allusion to the Berlin Wall. Simultaneously, another figure, in a suit and tie, watches all this passively, even when the bearded man finally breaks the wall and dies. ''Don Kihot'' is a 1961 experimental animated short by Vlado Kristl for Zagreb Film. It is loosely based on ''Don Quixote'' by Miguel de Cervantes. Themes The author reduced the characters in the short to Klee-style ideograms, with backgrounds being represented by abstract frescoes, all of which is accompanied by atonal music. Reception and legacy The short was blacklisted during the former Yugoslavia due to its rigid classification of art and society, which Don Kihot challenged. The short won a number of prizes at international festivals, such as the main prize at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in 1962. It is described as a "difficult but very poetic film" and a magnum opus for Kristl.
