Zachary Robert Thomas (born May 26, 1998) is an American professional football offensive tackle for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the San Diego State Aztecs and was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Professional career Chicago Bears Thomas was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 186th pick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He was waived on August 31, 2022, and re-signed to the practice squad. Los Angeles Rams On November 18, 2022, Thomas signed with the Los Angeles Rams from the practice squad of the Bears. He was released on November 25, 2023, and re-signed three days later. He signed a reserve/future contract on January 15, 2024. A tackle is a playing position in American football. Historically, in the one-platoon system prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a tackle played on both offense and defense. In the modern system of specialized units, offensive tackle and defensive tackle are separate positions, and the stand-alone term "tackle" refers to the offensive tackle position only. The offensive tackle (OT, T), sometimes specified as left tackle (LT) or right tackle (RT), is a position on the offensive line that flanks the two guards. Like other offensive linemen, their objective is to block during each offensive play, physically preventing defenders from tackling or disrupting the offensive ball carrier with the intention of advancing the football downfield. In gridiron football, the practice squad, also called the taxi squad or practice roster, is a group of players signed by a team but not part of their main roster. They serve as extra players during the team's practices, often as part of the scout team by emulating an upcoming opponent's play style. Because the players on the practice squad are familiar with the team's plays and formations, the practice squad serves as a way to develop inexperienced players for promotion to the main roster. This is particularly important for professional gridiron football teams, which do not have formal minor league farm team affiliates to train players.
