Zacharo
Zacharo () is a town and municipality in western Peloponnese, Greece. Administratively, it belongs to the regional unit of Elis (regional unit), Elis in West Greece. Zacharo is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Kyparissia, a part of the Ionian Sea. The mountain Lapithas is to the north, and the Minthi (mountain), Minthi is to the east. Northwest of the town, between mount Lapithas and the sea, is the Kaiafas Lake. Zacharo is 18 km south of Olympia, Greece, Olympia, 28 km southeast of Pyrgos, Elis, Pyrgos, 65 km northwest of Kalamata and 65 km west of Tripoli, Greece, Tripoli. The town is crossed by the Greek National Road 9/European route E55, E55, that links Patras with Kalamata. Giannitsochori () is a village in the municipality of Zacharo, southern Elis (regional unit), Elis, Greece. It is situated in the narrow coastal plains along the Ionian Sea, 2 km north of the mouth of the river Neda (river), Neda, at the foot of the western extensions of the mountain Minthi (mountain), Minthi. It is a known beach resort. It is 2 km north of Avlonas, Messenia, Elaia, 5 km southeast of Neochori, Zacharo, Neochori and 11 km southeast of Zacharo. Elis (regional Unit)
Elis also known as Ellis or Ilia (, ''Eleia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Here lie the ancient ruins of cities of Elis, Epitalion and Olympia, known for the ancient Olympic Games which started in 776 BC. Neochori () is a village in the municipality of Zacharo, southern Elis, Greece. It is situated on the Gulf of Kyparissia, a part of the Ionian Sea. The foothills of the Minthi are east of the village. Neochori is 3 km southeast of Kakovatos, 5 km northwest of Giannitsochori and 6 km south of Zacharo. Minthi
Minthi (, before 1927: Άλβενα - ''Alvena'') is a mountain village and a community in the municipality of Zacharo, Elis, Greece. The community includes the village Kotroni. It is situated at 760 m elevation on the northern slope of the mountain Minthi (after which it was named), 5 km south of Platiana, 12 km west of Andritsaina and 10 km east of Zacharo. The area of the community is 16,500 hectares. Population History The oldest mention of the village was the participation of its residents in the Ottoman–Venetian War (1463–1479), in which its leaders were Mitros Alveniotis and Giannis Agrios. In a Venetian census, between 1689 and 1700, it had 42 families and 149 residents. Minthi suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Lepreo (, before 1916: Στροβίτζι - ''Strovitzi'') is a village and a community in the municipality of Zacharo, Elis, Greece. The community includes the small villages Agrapidia, Drakos, Panagies, Revelaiika and Skoupas. It is situated on a hillside, 2 km southwest of Taxiarches, 5 km west of Nea Figaleia and 8 km southeast of Zacharo. Lepreo was named after the ancient city Lepreum. Figaleia () is a mountain village and a former Communities and Municipalities of Greece, municipality in Elis (regional unit), Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the administrative reform of 2011 it is a municipal unit of the municipality of Zacharo. The municipal unit has an area of 89.175 km2. In 2021 the population was 50 for the village and 1,250 for the municipal unit. The seat of the municipality was in Nea Figaleia. Lapithas
Lapithas () is a mountain located in southern Elis in the western Peloponnese in Greece. The mountain is named after the mythical people, the Lapiths. In the west the mountain touches the Ionian Sea. It is 15 to 20 km long and 10 km wide and covers and area of 100 to 150 km². A large part of the mountain is covered with pine forests, but has suffered great damage in the forest fires of August 2007. The Kaiafas Lake lies between the Lapithas and the Ionian Sea, northwest of the town Zacharo.
