Zabeel Mile
The Zabeel Mile, is a horse race run over a distance of 1,600 metres (one mile) on turf in late February or early March at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The race is named after a locality in Western Dubai. Not related with New Zealand stallion Zabeel. It was first contested in 2007 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse before being transferred to Meydan in 2010. The Zabeel Mile began as a Listed race. The race was elevated to Group 3 level in 2009 and became a Group 2 event in 2011. Meydan Racecourse
Meydan Racecourse is a racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The grandstand is over a mile in length, and can accommodate over 60,000 spectators. Meydan opened on 27 March 2010, replacing Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, which formerly occupied the same site. It includes a horse racing museum, gallery and five-star hotel and nine-hole golf course. When not in use for racing it serves as a business and conference centre. The track's interior was also used as a filming location for the film '' Star Trek Beyond'', depicting the docking bay where the USS ''Enterprise'' is moored, including the bar scene during the film's climax which contains a ship construction bay. Ted Durcan
Thomas Edward Durcan (born 25 February 1973) is a retired, two-time British Classic-winning Irish jockey. He was champion jockey in the United Arab Emirates on seven occasions and rode over 1,000 winners in Great Britain in career lasting from 1992 to 2017. Career Durcan was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and went to boarding school in Naas. The school held him back from a riding career for sometime, as it prevented him riding out for stables. Naas had its own racecourse, and several others within easy reach, so although it was against rules for boys to visit the course, his headmaster tolerated it. Jim Crowley is a flat jockey riding in Great Britain and was British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2016. History Jim Crowley (Born 14 July 1978) comes from Ascot and after beginning his horse racing career as an amateur flat race jockey he switched to National Hunt racing, riding for the stable of Sue Smith. He rode approximately 300 winners in National Hunt racing before returning to Flat racing and riding for his sister-in-law, Amanda Perrett, at Pulborough. In 2010 he became stable jockey for Ralph Beckett. Colm O'Donoghue
Colm O'Donoghue (born 13 November 1980, Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland) is a multiple Group 1 and Classic winning flat jockey. For most of his career, he was based at the Ballydoyle racing stables in Rosegreen, Cashel, County Tipperary. Career In his final days as a schoolboy in 1996, O'Donoghue rang Aidan O'Brien to ask to be his apprentice. O'Brien agreed. The association continued for two decades. O'Donoghue rode his first winner, My Lorraine, at Sligo in 1997. Richard Hughes (jockey)
Richard Hughes (born 11 January 1973) is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014. Riding career Hughes started pony racing aged seven, having his first win aboard Chestnut Lady in a six furlong race at Wexford. Silvestre de Sousa (born 31 December 1980 in São Francisco do Maranhão, Brazil) is a Brazilian flat racing jockey based in Britain. He was champion jockey of Britain in 2015, with 132 winners, and again in 2017 and 2018. Childhood and early career He was born in São Francisco do Maranhão, Maranhão. He moved to São Paulo when he was 17 years old. The youngest of ten siblings, de Sousa was 18 before he sat on a racehorse for the first time. Mahmood Al Zarooni
Mahmood Al Zarooni (born October 16, 1975) is an Emirati horse-racing trainer at the Godolphin horse-racing operation along with Saeed bin Suroor. He was born in Dubai, and became trainer on 24 March 2010, before the Dubai World Cup meeting. His first winner was Calming Influence, who won the Godolphin Mile. On 22 April 2013, the British Horseracing Authority disclosed that 11 horses trained by Mahmood al-Zarooni tested positive for anabolic steroids. He admitted being in breach of the rules of racing. All 11 horses were banned from racing and Mahmood al-Zarooni faced disciplinary charges. On 25 April 2013, he was banned from racing for eight years. In June 2021, Al Zarooni announced his return to racing. His racing licence was returned by the Emirates Racing Authority and he is now based at the Sharjah Equestrian Club. Christophe Soumillon
Christophe Soumillon (born 4 June 1981) is a Belgian jockey based in France. Career Coming from a racing background, Soumillon is the son of jump jockey Jean-Marc Soumillon. He rode in pony races and left Belgium aged fifteen to go to the racing school in Chantilly, France, where he was then apprenticed to trainer Cédric Boutin. Soumillon rode his first Group race winner aged eighteen when Berine's Son, trained by André Fabre, won the 2000 Prix de Fontainebleau. The following season he won four Group 1 races, including the Prix du Jockey Club on Anabaa.
