Yu Chen (artist)
Yu Chen () is a contemporary Chinese artist and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Early life Chen was born in the Guizhou province of China in 1963. She has a brother named Chen Yu. She graduated from the Guizhou Art Institute in 1981 and the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing in 1988. Art Chen is best known for her ''Red Babies'' (红孩儿) series, which features portraits of Chinese children in Mao suits and other Communist garb. Some of the portraits in the series bear a likeness to Mao Zedong and other well-known Communist officials. The title ''Red Babies'' (红孩儿) carries a double meaning, simultaneously referring to children born in Communist China and to the Red Boy from the Chinese epic ''Journey to the West''. Central Academy Of Fine Arts
The Central Academy of Fine Arts or CAFA is an art academy under the direct charge of the Ministry of Education of China. The Manila Bulletin calls the school "China’s most prestigious and renowned art academy." It is considered one of the most selective schools in the country and turns away more than 90% of its applicants each year." Mao Suit
The modern Chinese tunic suit is a style of male attire originally known in China as the Zhongshan suit () after the republican leader Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan). Sun Yat-sen introduced the style shortly after the founding of the Republic of China (1912–1949) as a form of national dress with distinct political overtones. The four pockets are said to represent the Four Virtues of propriety, justice, honesty, and shame; and the five buttons the branches of China's former government ( Executive, Legislative, Judicial, Examination, Control). After the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War and the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, such suits came to be worn widely by male citizens and government leaders as a symbol of proletarian unity and an Eastern counterpart to the Western business suit. Red Boy (; , ) was a character featured in the 16th century novel ''Journey to the West''. Red Boy was also known as the Boy Sage Great King (聖嬰大王, ''Shèngyīng Dàwáng'') and "Bull Boy Sage" (牛聖嬰, ''Niú Shèngyīng''). Through this, Red Boy had developed ''True Samādhi Fire'' (三昧真火, Pinyin: ''Sānmèi-zhēnhuǒ''), which enables him to shoot fire inextinguishable by water and smoke from his eyes, nostrils and mouth. ''Journey to the West'' () is a Chinese novel published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng'en. It is regarded as one of the Classic Chinese Novels, great Chinese novels, and has been described as arguably the most popular literary work in East Asia. It was widely known in English-speaking countries through the British scholar Arthur Waley's 1942 abridged translation ''Monkey (novel), Monkey''. The novel is a fictionalized and fantasy, fantastic account of the pilgrimage of the Chinese Buddhism, Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who went on a 16-year journey to India in the 7th century AD to seek out and collect Buddhist scriptures (sūtras).
