Ystalyfera Grammar School
Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur is a Welsh-medium comprehensive school in Neath Port Talbot, Wales. The school provides education to three to eighteen-year-old pupils in Neath Port Talbot and south Powys from three campuses in Ystalyfera and Port Talbot. History It was founded in 1969 as Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera (Ystalyfera Secondary School), on the site of the former Ystalyfera Grammar School. In 2017 the school merged with Ysgol Gynradd y Wern primary school to form an all-age school for ages three to eighteen. In September 2018 the Bro Dur ('Steel Land') campus opened in Port Talbot, which operates alongside the primary and secondary school campuses in Ystalyfera. A second Welsh-medium comprehensive campus named Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Dur was opened, it is also referred to as Ystalyfera South. Ystalyfera
Ystalyfera is a former industrial village and community in the upper Swansea Valley, on the River Tawe, about northeast of Swansea. It is an electoral ward and a community in the unitary authority of Neath Port Talbot, Wales, comprising a resident population of just over 3,000 people, approximately 60% of whom speak Welsh. Siân Lloyd
Siân Mary Lloyd (born 3 July 1958) is a Welsh television presenter and meteorologist from Maesteg. She was the United Kingdom's longest-serving female weather forecaster, having appeared on ITV Weather for 24 years, from 1990 until 2014. Biography Lloyd was born in Maesteg, Glamorgan, the daughter of two teachers. She attended Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, and in 1975 performed at the Urdd National Eisteddfod where she won the Crown. She graduated with first-class honours from University College, Cardiff (now Cardiff University), before going on to Jesus College, Oxford where she began work for a post-graduate B.Litt. degree in Celtic Studies, but she left after a year without graduating. Kristian Phillips (born 2 September 1990) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays on the wing and has represented Wales at under-16, under-18 and under-20 levels. Life and career Phillips was involved in a controversy when he was 13. After he starred in a game where his school Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera thrashed south London private school Dulwich College, Dulwich approached Phillips and offered him a scholarship, without telling his school. Derwyn Jones
Derwyn Jones (born 14 November 1970, in Carmarthen, Wales) is a former professional Welsh rugby union player and Welsh international. He is the tallest Welsh player to be capped at 6 ft 10 inches tall, and weighed over 20 stone at his peak. Career Jones studied sports science at Loughborough University. Jones made his international debut on Saturday, 26 November 1994 against South Africa in Cardiff aged 24 where Wales lost 20-12. He went on to play in 17 of the next 19 Internationals, earning nineteen caps for Wales. Alun Hugh Cairns (born 30 July 1970) is a Welsh Conservative Party politician serving as the member of Parliament (MP) for Vale of Glamorgan since 2010. Ian Jones (born 14 January 1959) is a Welsh television executive who served as the chief executive of S4C from 2011 to 2017. Personal life and education Jones was born in Morriston, Swansea in 1959 to Margaret Jones and Lyle Jones. Educated at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, he studied economics at Aberystwyth University. Career Jones was a commissioning executive and was part of the launch team at S4C in 1982, remaining at the channel until 1985 when he joined ITV as a unit manager in its entertainment division.
