Young Marble Giants
Young Marble Giants were a Welsh post-punk band formed in Cardiff, Wales, in 1978. Their music was based around the vocals of Alison Statton along with the minimalist instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham. Their early sound was a sharp contrast with the more aggressive punk rock that dominated the underground at the time. Young Marble Giants released just one studio album, '' Colossal Youth'', in 1980. They also released two EPs and recorded a John Peel session. History Members of Young Marble Giants had previously been in a band called True Wheel. Stuart Moxham's girlfriend, Wendy Smith, lent him the money to buy his Rickenbacker. Alison Statton (born March 1958) is a Welsh singer best known for her work with Young Marble Giants. Kouros
Kouros (, , plural kouroi) is the modern term given to free-standing Ancient Greek sculpture, Ancient Greek sculptures that depict nude male youths. They first appear in the Archaic period in Greece and are prominent in Attica and Boeotia, with a less frequent presence in many other Ancient Greek territories such as Sicily. Such statues are found across the Greek-speaking world; the preponderance of these were found in sanctuaries of Apollo with more than one hundred from the sanctuary of Apollo Ptoion, Boeotia, alone. These free-standing sculptures were typically marble, but the form is also rendered in limestone, wood, bronze, ivory and terracotta. Afro Celt Sound System
Afro Celt Sound System are a European and African group who fuse electronic music with traditional Gaelic and West African music. Afro Celt Sound System was formed in 1995 by producer-guitarist Simon Emmerson, and feature a wide range of guest artists. In 2003, they temporarily changed their name to Afrocelts before reverting to their original name. Their albums have been released through Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, and they have frequently performed at WOMAD festivals worldwide. Their sales on the label are exceeded only by Gabriel himself. Their recording contract with Real World was for five albums, of which ''Volume 5: Anatomic'' was the last. After a number of festival dates in 2007, the band went on hiatus. Working Week (band)
Working Week were a British jazz-dance band active in the 1980s and 1990s. Working Week was formed in 1983 by guitarist Simon Emmerson, Simon Booth and saxophonist Larry Stabbins from the band Weekend (Welsh band), Weekend, which ended when singer Alison Statton left to become a chiropractor. Initially a floating ensemble of nine players including trombonist Annie Whitehead, vocalist Julie Driscoll, Julie Tippett, pianist Keith Tippett and percussionist Bosco D'Oliveira, Working Week released their debut single "Venceremos (We Will Win)" during the following year. The song was a tribute to Chilean protest singer VÃctor Jara, with vocals by Robert Wyatt and Tracey Thorn (the latter from the band Everything but the Girl). It became the band's highest placing in the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at No. 64. Booth and Stabbins then recruited Juliet Roberts as permanent vocalist and started working on an album. Simon Emmerson
Simon Emmerson (12 March 1956 – 13 March 2023) was an English musician and record producer. He founded the bands Working Week, Weekend, and Afro Celt Sound System. Early life and education Simon was born in London, the son of Alan Emmerson, an architect who had also worked as manager for the rock band Screw, and his wife, Mercia (nee Samson), a sociology lecturer, both members of the Communist party. He attended Ibstock Place School and then Wandsworth School. He attended Forest School Camps, in which his father was heavily involved, and there he developed his love of folk song, nature and bird watching. Career Weekend Emmerson formed Weekend in 1981 with Alison Statton, under the pseudonym Simon Booth. Around this time he also played guitar on Everything but the Girl's debut album '' Eden''. Spike (Welsh Guitarist)
Mark Williams more commonly known as Spike or Spike Williams is a Welsh guitarist and co-founder of South Wales' record label, Z Block Records. He was a member of the Cardiff-based band Reptile Ranch. Career history Named was Spike's record label set up and named after the Z-Block college building they used in Ebbw Vale, South Wales in 1978. In May 1979, Z Block moved to Splott, Cardiff, where they set about organising the city's first DIY compilation LP. Titled ''Is The War Over?'', this seminal compilation was released in October 1979 and its release brought The Young Marble Giants to Rough Trade's attention. Philippe Auclair (24 June 1959), also known by his moniker Louis Philippe, is a French singer-songwriter, musician, news correspondent and football journalist who has been active from the mid-1980s onwards. Étienne Daho (; ; born 14 January 1956) is a French singer-songwriter. He has released a number of synth-driven and rock- surf influenced pop hit singles since 1981. Career Daho was born in Oran, French Algeria. He sings in a low, whispery voice somewhat akin to Leonard Cohen or Chet Baker and his music established him as a pop cult hero. Leeds
Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It is the largest settlement in Yorkshire and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough, which is the second most populous district in the United Kingdom. Futurama Festival
Futurama Festival was an annual post-punk and gothic rock festival held at venues in Leeds, Stafford and Queensferry between 1979 and 1983. A sixth edition was held in 1989. It aimed for a relaunch in 2021 but, after being postponed, was forced to cancel as a result of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Festival At the end of the 1970s, promoter John Keenan was running an event called F Club in Leeds and decided to put on the Futurama festival at the Queens Hall on 8 and 9 September 1979, billing it as the "World's First Science-Fiction Music Festival". The lineup included A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Fall, Joy Division, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Public Image Ltd and The Teardrop Explodes.
