Young ACT
Young ACT, formerly known as Prebble's Rebels, ACTivists and ACT on Campus, is a Youth wing, youth group affiliated with ACT New Zealand, a classical-liberal political party in New Zealand. It has supported the party for over two decades though has disagreed with ACT policy on issues such as Alcohol law, alcohol and Drug policy reform, drug restrictions. In 2020, a number of Young ACT members resigned over an alleged culture of sexual harassment within the group, and an independent investigation into the claims was launched. , no information from this investigation has been publicly released. Creation and names The youth division of the ACT Party was formed in 1996 at Victoria University of Wellington. The group was called "Prebble's Rebels" after the party's then-leader Richard Prebble. Classical Liberalism
Classical liberalism is a political tradition and a branch of liberalism that advocates free market and laissez-faire economics and civil liberties under the rule of law, with special emphasis on individual autonomy, limited government, economic freedom, political freedom and freedom of speech. Classical liberalism, contrary to progressive branches like social liberalism, looks more negatively on social policies, taxation and the state involvement in the lives of individuals, and it advocates deregulation. Until the Great Depression and the rise of social liberalism, classical liberalism was called economic liberalism. John Banks (New Zealand Politician)
John Archibald Banks (born 2 December 1946) is a New Zealand former politician. He was a member of Parliament for the National Party from 1981 to 1999, and for ACT New Zealand from 2011 to 2014. He was a Cabinet Minister from 1990 to 1996 and 2011 to 2013. He left Parliament after being convicted of filing a false electoral return – a verdict which was later overturned. In between his tenures in Parliament, he served as Mayor of Auckland City for two terms, from 2001 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2010. When seven former smaller councils were combined into one to run the Auckland 'supercity' in 2010, Banks unsuccessfully ran for mayor again. The electoral return that he filed after that campaign, detailing donations received and campaign expenses, was the subject of Banks' conviction and eventual acquittal. The Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) () is the public service, public-service department of New Zealand charged with promoting New Zealand's national security by collecting and analysing information of an intelligence nature. The GCSB is considered to be New Zealand's most powerful intelligence agency, and has been alleged to have conducted more espionage and data collection than the country's primary intelligence agency, the less funded New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, NZSIS. ''Newshub'' (stylised as Newshub.) was a New Zealand news service that operated from 1989 to 2024 and served as the local news division of Warner Bros. Discovery New Zealand until its closure. The division, known as ''3 News'' until 2016, had produced news bulletins and current affairs programming for the television channel Three (TV channel), Three from its inception. Hamilton East is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate. Population centres Since the , the number of electorates in the South Island was fixed at 25, with continued faster population growth in the North Island leading to an increase in the number of general electorates. There were 84 electorates for the 1969 election, and the 1972 electoral redistribution saw three additional general seats created for the North Island, bringing the total number of electorates to 87. 2020 New Zealand General Election
The 2020 New Zealand general election was held on Saturday 17 October 2020 to determine the composition of the 53rd New Zealand Parliament. Voters elected 120 members to the New Zealand House of Representatives, House of Representatives, 72 from New Zealand electorates, single-member electorates and 48 from Closed list, closed party lists. Ōtaki (New Zealand Electorate)
Ōtaki (previously Otaki) is a New Zealand Parliamentary electorate, spanning part of the west coast of the lower North Island. The bulk of its population comes from the Horowhenua District, but it also takes in part of the northern Kāpiti Coast, including the towns of Ōtaki and Waikanae, and part of Paraparaumu. James McDowall
James Samuel McDowall (born 6 January 1988) is a former New Zealand politician. He was a Member of Parliament for ACT New Zealand from 2020 until 2023. Early life and career McDowall was born in Pukekohe in 1988. McDowall studied management at the University of Waikato and Maastricht University and graduated from Waikato in 2018 with a PhD in marketing.
