You Are What You Is (song)
"You Are What You Is" is a single which Frank Zappa released from his 1981 album of the same title. The song is known for going out of its way to use improper English, basically mocking the rest of its context. It was the B-side for 1982 single "Valley Girl". This song was also remixed for the 1984 album ''Thing-Fish''. Meaning The lyrics, which essentially tell the listener to be themselves and embrace their culture, tell the stories of two young men, both of whom Zappa describes as "foolish". The first man is from a middle class family who has a great life, but he pretends to come from a culture of hardship and sings the blues to be manly. He develops a taste for chitlins and begins to talk like the character Kingfish, from the radio show ''Amos and Andy,'' who was known for being a heavily stereotypical black character. The Persuasions
The Persuasions were an American a cappella group that formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1962, singing under corner streetlights and in subway corridors. Their style combined gospel, soul, early rock, and jazz into melodic five-part harmonies. Since being discovered by Frank Zappa, the Persuasions have released 23 studio albums to date. Career The Persuasions appeared on public affairs television shows, such as ''Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant'' on WNEW-TV and '' Like It Is'' on WABC-TV in 1968. Frank Zappa was responsible for the Persuasions' first LP, ''Acappella''. He heard the Persuasions singing over the phone from a New Jersey record shop known as Stan's Square Records. ''200 Motels'' is a 1971 surrealist musical film written and directed by Frank Zappa and Tony Palmer, and featuring music by Zappa. An international co-production of United States and the United Kingdom, the film stars the Mothers of Invention, Theodore Bikel, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr. ''Zoot Allures'' is the 22nd album by the American rock musician Frank Zappa, released in October 1976. It was his only release on the Warner Bros. Records label. Due to financial and legal disputes with his former manager Herb Cohen, Zappa had his recording contract briefly reassigned from DiscReet to Warner Bros. Cohen quickly filed a lawsuit against Warner and Zappa based on the claim that this reassignment was in violation of previous contracts. Therefore, the final four albums of Zappa's recording contract were reassigned back to DiscReet. Title The title is a pun on the French expression " Zut alors!", which conveys "''dammit!''" The Europeans (band)
The Europeans were a British New wave music, new wave group formed in 1981 and disbanded in 1985. They released three albums, none of which achieved much in terms of record chart, chart position. In 1989, their former keyboard player and co-lead vocalist Steve Hogarth joined Marillion as lead vocalist. The Europeans should not be confused with the similarly named Europeans (band), Europeans, a Bristol band that were active 1977-1979. History In 1980, a Scottish band called Motion Pictures (consisting of Harper, Woore, Dugmore) moved to London and advertised for a keyboard player. Steve Hogarth, who had recently moved to London from Doncaster, was chosen. The band rehearsed in Shepperton, changing their name to The Europeans in early 1981.
