Yossi Sariel
Yossi Sariel (; born in 1978) is an Israel Defense Forces officer. He was the commander of Unit 8200. In 2018, he was awarded the Israel Security Award for an artificial intelligence project and an anti-terrorism project. Military Career He was born in 1978 and grew up in Haifa. He enlisted in the IDF Intelligence Division in 1997 and served as an intelligence and cyber officer in Unit 8200. Then as an intelligence officer in Division 91, head of the northern arena in the research division, an intelligence officer of the Central Command, and the head of the operational division at Aman. On 28 February 2021, he was appointed commander of Unit 8200 in place of Brigadier General Asaf Khochan who retired. He also served in this position during the Gaza war until his resignation on 12 September 2024. ( or "first/leader of a group" in Biblical Hebrew) is a senior military rank in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for officers who in other countries would have the rank of general, air marshal, or admiral. In addition to the ''aluf'' rank, four other ranks are derivatives of the word, together, constituting the five Israel Defense Forces ranks, highest ranks in the IDF. Aside from being a military rank, "aluf" is also used in a civilian context, particularly in sports, meaning "champion". Unit 8200 (, ''Yehida shmone matayim'' "Unit eight two-hundred") is an Israeli Intelligence Corps unit of the Israel Defense Forces responsible for clandestine operation, collecting signal intelligence (SIGINT) and code decryption, counterintelligence, cyberwarfare, military intelligence, and surveillance. The Israeli Intelligence Corps (, ''Heil HaModi'in''), abbreviated to Haman () is an Israel Defense Forces corps which falls under the jurisdiction of IDF Directorate of Military Intelligence ( Aman) and is responsible for collecting, disseminating, and publishing intelligence information for the General Staff and the political branch.
