Yosemite Cemetery
Yosemite Cemetery, also known as Pioneer Cemetery, is a cemetery built in the 1870s and located on the west end of Yosemite Village, in Mariposa County, California. In 2014, the Yosemite Conservancy worked in restoring the cemetery and graves. Many of the graves are from the earliest European-descent pioneers, and a few of the graves were for Native Americans that had lived in the valley. Yosemite Valley, California
Yosemite Valley (''Yosemite'', Miwok for "killer") is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mariposa County, California, United States. It consists of the developed area of Yosemite Village and the other areas of the Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. The population was 337 at the 2020 census. Situated along the north side of the valley floor, its permanent population includes staff of the National Park Service, which administers the park, and some concession workers associated with various contracts in the park. The village has some public facilities, such as a fire station, a post office ( ZIP Code 95389), a medical clinic, a convenience store, restaurants, gift shops, and a school (kindergarten through eighth grade). Ahwahnechee
The Ahwahnechee, Awani, or Awalache were an Indigenous people of California who historically lived in the Yosemite Valley. They were a band of Mono people, Mono and Plains_and_Sierra_Miwok#Southern_Sierra_Miwok, Miwok People. The Awani people's heritage can be found all over Yosemite National Park. Name The name ''Awani'' was also the name of their primary village. The anglicizations of their name from the 19th century have included Ahwahnechee (by Hittell in 1868), Awalache (by Johnston in 1851), Awallache (by McKee in 1851), and Awanee (by Powers in 1874). Pioneer Cemetery
In the United States, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere, a pioneer cemetery is a cemetery that is the burial place for pioneers. American pioneers founded such cemeteries during territorial expansion of the United States, with founding dates spanning, at least, from the late 18th to early 20th centuries. A number of these have been officially designated as historic sites worthy of preservation, including at least 10 listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). James Mason Hutchings
James Mason Hutchings (February 10, 1820 – October 31, 1902) was an American businessman and one of the principal promoters of what is now Yosemite National Park. Biography Born in Towcester in England, Hutchings immigrated to the U.S. in 1848, then went to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush. He became wealthy as a miner, lost it all in a bank failure, then became wealthy again from publishing. In 1853, James Hutchings published ''The Miner's Ten Commandments'' in the Placerville Herald, capturing the social norms, challenges, and everyday life of California Gold Rush miners. This document, later reprinted as letter sheets, served as stationery for miners to document their experiences in the gold fields. Remarkably, over 97,000 of these letter sheets were sold in just over a year, a significant feat given that the entire population of the state was less than five times that number at the time. Florence Hutchings (Yosemite)
Florence Hutchings (also Floy or Flora, August 23, 1864—September 26, 1881) was the daughter of James Mason Hutchings and his wife Elvira. She lived a short but colorful life. Her life She was born on August 23, 1864, and was the first non-Ahwahnechee born in Yosemite Valley. Her birth was in the Hutchings' Upper Hotel, but she grew up in a log cabin built in 1865, on the north side of the Valley. She grew up within the sight and sound of Yosemite Falls. She grew to fame due to her tomboy ways, and throughout her short life complained that she had not been born a boy. She played with lizards instead of dolls and, when older, rolled her own Roll-your-own cigarette, cigarettes. Mariposa County () is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was 17,131. The county seat is Mariposa. George Fiske
George Fiske (October 22, 1835 – October 21, 1918) was an American landscape photographer. Biography Fiske was born on October 22, 1835, in Amherst, New Hampshire. He moved west with his brother to San Francisco. He apprenticed under Charles Leander Weed, Charles L. Weed and worked with Carleton Watkins, Carleton E. Watkins, both early Yosemite National Park photographers. Fiske and his wife moved to Yosemite in 1879 and lived there until he committed suicide in 1918. Fiske was living alone when he shot himself, and he often told his neighbors he was "tired of living." Most of his negatives were destroyed when his house burned in 1904. Legacy Years later, when photographer Ansel Adams was a boy, his Aunt Mary gave him a copy of James M. Hutchings, ''In the Heart of the Sierras'' (1888) when he was sick.
