Gentlemen's Club
A gentlemen's club is a private social club of a type originally established by males from Britain's upper classes starting in the 17th century. Many countries outside Britain have prominent gentlemen's clubs, mostly those associated with the British Empire such as the Royal Society in London set up in 1660. The form spread to other parts of the Empire such as Australia, India, Ireland, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. There are also many similar clubs in major American cities, especially the older ones. Vesper Country Club
Vesper Country Club is a private club in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts. The club derives from two late 19th century institutions, Vesper Boat Club and Lowell Country Club, which merged in 1894. The following year, members started creating a golf course originally consisting of six "links." In the late 1910s, the course commissioned Donald Ross to create a full 18-hole course. Though the course met with praise the ensuing decades were hard for Vesper. In the 1920s the clubhouse burnt down and in the 1930s a flood nearly destroyed the course. Since then, however, the club's history has been largely stable and the course has hosted several notable events, including the Massachusetts Open and Massachusetts Amateur several times. William Richard Cutter
William Richard Cutter (August 17, 1847 – June 6, 1918) was an American historian, librarian, genealogist, and writer. Life Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, on August 17, 1847, he was the son of Dr. Benjamin Cutter and Mary Whittemore Cutter. He attended the Woburn Public School and the Warren Academy. He developed an interest in genealogy and history from his father, and was able to conduct further research while at Yale University, building upon the genealogy of the Cutter family and historical documents begun by his father. He received his Master of Arts degree from Norwich University. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Kimball and lived in Lexington, Massachusetts. They had a daughter, Sarah, who was born in 1873 and died in 1890. Cutter died on June 6, 1918, in Woburn. Career He was a secretary of the Trustees of Warren Academy. Charles Herbert Allen (April 15, 1848 – April 20, 1934) was an American politician and businessman. After serving in state and federal elected positions, he was appointed as the first United States-appointed civilian governor of Puerto Rico when the U.S. acquired it after the Spanish–American War. He previously had served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President William McKinley. After returning to the U.S. from Puerto Rico, Allen headed for Wall Street and became a vice president of Morton Trust Company and its successor, the J.P. Morgan & Co., Guaranty Trust Company of New York. He formed the American Sugar Refining Company—a sugar syndicate which, by 1907, was the largest in the world.
