Yoel Schwartz
Yoel Schwartz (; 29 September 1939 – 8 September 2022) was an Israeli Haredi Judaism, Haredi Jewish rabbi, Torah scholar, and writer who published over 200 Jewish books. He was a senior lecturer at Dvar Yerushalayim yeshiva in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Nof, an English-speaking institute for ''baal teshuva, baalei teshuva''. He was also involved in 2004 attempt to revive the Sanhedrin, attempts to revive the Sanhedrin. Yeshivas Itri () is an Orthodox yeshiva in southeast Jerusalem. Founded in 1968 by Rabbi Mordechai Elefant, the yeshiva has several branches in Israel and the United States, and spawned several educational programs for Diaspora Jews. Haredi Judaism (, ) is a branch of Orthodox Judaism that is characterized by its strict interpretation of religious sources and its accepted (Jewish law) and traditions, in opposition to more accommodating values and practices. Modern Attempts To Revive The Sanhedrin
Modern attempts to revive the Sanhedrin refer to the efforts from 1538 to the present aimed at renewing the Sanhedrin, which was the high court and legislative authority for Jews before it was dissolved by Roman Emperor Constantius II in 358. Although 358 was the year of the proclamation, no documentation exists regarding when the Sanhedrin actually dissolved. Modern attempts to revive the Sanhedrin rely on the opinion of Maimonides (1135–1204), who proposed a mechanism by which '' semikhah'' and the Sanhedrin could be reestablished. Several attempts have been made to implement Maimonides's recommendations. In 1538, Rabbi Jacob Berab of Safed attempted to restore the traditional form of ''semikhah'' and ordained several other rabbis, including Yosef Karo. However, this attempt was controversial, and the chain of ordination died out after several generations. Netzah Yehuda Battalion
The 97th Netzah Yehuda Battalion (, ), previously known as Nahal Haredi () is a battalion in the Kfir Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces. The purpose of the unit is to allow Haredi Jewish men to serve as combat soldiers in the Israeli military by creating an atmosphere conducive to their religious convictions in the strict observance of ''Halakha''. The battalion has been accused of human rights violations against Palestinians, including killing unarmed civilians, killing suspects in custody, and torture. Despite the original purpose of the battalion being to accommodate Haredim who wish to serve in the military, the majority of the unit (60%) is drawn from Dati Leumi (Religious Zionist) community, specifically those as part of the Hardal sub-group.
