Yirandali
The Yirandhali are an indigenous Australian people, who lived in the area of the present day Shire of Flinders in the state of Queensland. Language Yirandhali may, according to Robert Dixon, belong to the Maric branch of the Pama–Nyungan language family. According to Peter Sutton, the list of words given by an early settler, M. Armstrong, of the language of the Upper Cape River, which Norman Tindale ascribes to the Yilba, actually refers to the Yirandhali language. Country The Yirandhali had an estimated territorial estate, according to Tindale, of around . The heartland of their country lay west of the Great Dividing Range, around the upper Dutton and Flinders rivers and stretched from near Mount Sturgeon southwards as far as Caledonia. Flinders River
The Flinders River is the longest river in Queensland, Australia, at approximately . It was named in honour of the explorer Matthew Flinders. The catchment is sparsely populated and mostly undeveloped. Dutton River is a rural locality in the Flinders Shire, Queensland, Australia. In the , Dutton River had a population of 66 people. Geography The ''Flinders River'' flows through from south-east to south-west. ''Dutton River'' (the watercourse) rises in the locality and forms part of the western boundary before flowing south-west to join the ''Flinders''. Yirandhali (Yirandali, Jirandali), also known as Pooroga, is an extinct Australian Aboriginal language of Hughenden in Central Queensland. Yirandhali is a Pama–Nyungan language. Corfield is a town and locality in the Shire of Winton in north-western Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Corfield had a population of 158 people. Geography The town is on the Kennedy Developmental Road—the road linking Winton and Hughenden— north west of the state capital Brisbane and south west of the regional centre of Townsville. The Landsborough Highway also passes through the locality (but not through the town) merging with the Kennedy Developmental Road just before crossing into Winton. Kanaka (Pacific Island Worker)
Kanakas were workers (a mix of voluntary and involuntary) from various Pacific Islands employed in British colonies, such as British Columbia (Canada), Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Queensland (Australia) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They also worked in California (United States) and Chile (see also Easter Island and the Rapa Nui). Mary Montgomerie Bennett
Mary Montgomerie Bennett (1881–1961) was an Australian activist and teacher. She is notable as a historical advocate for the rights of Aboriginal Australians, particularly in Western Australia, at a time when this was not a common feature of Australian public life. Ms Bennett was a particularly strong critic of her historical contemporary A. O. Neville. Biography Bennett's childhood was spent in both England and Australia, where her father Robert Christison had a station in north Queensland. By 1910, the family had sold up and relocated permanently to England. Bennett married Charles Douglas Bennett in 1914. In 1927, she published ''Christison of Lammermoor'', a biography of her father which was comparatively unusual at the time for its acknowledgement of settler violence towards Aborigines.
