Yemen Times
The ''Yemen Times'' () was an independent English-language newspaper in Yemen. The paper was published twice weekly. History 1990–1999 The ''Yemen Times'' was founded in 1990 by Abdulaziz al-Saqqaf, an economics professor at Sanaa University, along with two assistants. The ''Times'' was among the dozens of newspapers founded in the wake of the reunification of Yemen and the new prospect of a democracy. Saqqaf registered the newspaper with the Ministry of Information and was granted Licence Number 9. The first issue of the ''Yemen Times'' was published on 27 February 1991, focusing on Yemen and President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s stance of neutrality during the Gulf War, which had recently concluded. Reception to the first issue was generally positive, and within a few years the ''Times'' had become “Yemen’s most influential paper and the most successful commercially”, with numerous ministers, officials and politicians requesting interviews from it. Abdulaziz Al-Saqqaf
Professor Abdulaziz Y. Al-Saqqaf (24 October 1951 in Taiz – 2 June 1999) was a Yemeni human-rights activist, economist, and journalist. Saqqaf established the ''Yemen Times'', unified Yemen's first and most widely read English language, English-language independent newspaper, in 1991, and was the winner of the N.P.C.'s ''International Award for Freedom of the Press'' for 1995. He was also a leading economist at the state-owned Sana'a University. He won the lifetime Achievement Award of the 2006 Middle East Publishing Conference in recognition of his efforts in promoting freedom of the press in Yemen and in the region. Dr. Saqqaf was killed in 1999 when he was hit by a motorist. Despite appeals by Dr. Saqqaf's heirs to re-open an investigation into the crash due to indicators that it may have been a carefully coordinated assassination, the authorities in 1999 refused to do so, resulting in a withdrawal from the trial proceedings against the car driver. Yemen Observer
The ''Yemen Observer'' () is an English-language tri-weekly newspaper published in the Republic of Yemen. It was founded in 1996 by Faris Sanabani, aide and press secretary of then Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Its editors include Editor-in-Chief Abdulaziz Oudha, ''Yemen Observers feature writers are Abdulaziz Oudha, Faisal Darem. Since 1996, the ''Yemen Observer Publishing House'' has diversified dramatically from a single bi-weekly newspaper to a five-armed media institution, publishing both in English and in Arabic: '' Yemen Today''. Martha Gellhorn Prize
The Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, named for the war correspondent, Martha Gellhorn, was established in 1999 by the Martha Gellhorn Trust. The Trust is a UK-registered charity. The award is founded on the following principles: The award will be for the kind of reporting that distinguished Martha: in her own words "the view from the ground". This is essentially a human story that penetrates the established version of events and illuminates an urgent issue buried by prevailing fashions of what makes news. We would expect the winner to tell an unpalatable truth, validated by powerful facts, that exposes establishment conduct and its propaganda, or "official drivel", as Martha called it. Iona Craig
Iona Craig (born 1976) is a British-Irish freelance journalist. Since 2010 her reporting has focused on Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula. She is the great-granddaughter of Sir James Craig, an Independent TD, and a cousin of Jeremy Craig, former Irish Ambassador to Lebanon. Career Craig was raised in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, and attended City University in London. Previous to her study and work as a journalist, Craig was a horse trainer and jockey. She was Assistant Trainer to Champion Trainer Nicky Henderson. As a BBC intern, Craig studied Arabic, and moved to Sana’a, Yemen in 2010 to become an editor at the ''Yemen Times''. USS Cole Bombing
The USS ''Cole'' bombing was a suicide attack by Al-Qaeda against , a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, on 12 October 2000, while it was being refueled in Yemen's Aden harbor. Seventeen U.S. Navy sailors were killed and thirty-seven injured in the deadliest attack against a United States naval vessel since the USS ''Stark'' incident in 1987. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. A U.S. judge has held Sudan liable for the attack, while another has released over $13 million in Sudanese frozen assets to the relatives of those killed. The United States Navy has reconsidered its rules of engagement in response to this attack.
