Yellow House Artist Collective
The Yellow House at 57–59 Macleay Street, Potts Point, was an artists' collective that began as an exhibition space for Martin Sharp's Art named THE MARTIN SHARP GALLERY in 1970. After Albie Thoms and Martin discussed the possibility of expanding the concept it was decided to add many other artists works and films and performances directed by Albie and a school The Ginger Meggs School of Arts and rename the gallery THE YELLOW HOUSE from 1971 through to the beginning of 1973 when Martin left.in Sydney, Australia. Many other younger artists and performers kept the YH going for another year when an unpaid electricity bill forced the closure. Despite controversies between artists about who was there and what they did Martin Sharp acknowledged that Albie was a prime mover. Albie Thoms expanded the facility and opened it as THE YELLOW HOUSE in 1971 to incorporate input from a variety of artists and performers. Roger Foley-Fogg , formerly known by the pseudonym Ellis D Fogg and later by his name Roger Foley, is an Australian artist, lighting designer, and lumino kinetic artist. Early life and education Roger Foley was born in Cairns, Queensland, and attended Newington College in Sydney(1957–1959). In the late 1950s he was encouraged by his mother to expand his interest in art, attending Joy and Betty Rainer's art and craft classes in Mosman, experimenting with light and shadow through bathroom glass and with light diffracted through the leaves of trees. George Gittoes
George Noel Gittoes, (born 7 December 1949) is an Australian artist, film producer, director and writer. In 1970, he was a founder of the Yellow House Artist Collective in Sydney. After the Yellow House finished, he established himself in Bundeena and since then has produced a large and varied output of drawings, paintings, films, and writings. Gittoes’ work has consistently expressed his social, political and humanitarian concern at the effects of injustice and conflict. Until the mid-1980s, this work was chiefly done in Australia. But in 1986 he travelled to Nicaragua, and since then the focus of Gittoes’ work has been largely international. He has travelled to and worked in many regions of conflict, including the Philippines, Somalia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Bougainville, and South Africa. Martin Sharp
Martin Ritchie Sharp (21 January 1942 – 1 December 2013) was an Australian artist, cartoonist, songwriter and film-maker. Career Sharp was born in Bellevue Hill, New South Wales in 1942, and educated at Cranbrook private school, where one of his teachers was the artist Justin O'Brien. In 1960, Sharp enrolled at the National Art School at East Sydney. He was one of the editors of '' Oz'', an Australia/UK alternative/ underground satire magazine published from 1963 to 1973 and associated with the international counterculture of that era. Sharp was called Australia's foremost pop artist. Arthur Cantrill, AM (born 1938) and Corinne Mozelle Cantrill, AM (6 November 1928 – 18 February 2025) are filmmakers, academics, composers and authors based in Castlemaine, Australia.
