Fort Yates, North Dakota
Fort Yates is a city in Sioux County, North Dakota, United States. It is the tribal headquarters of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and county seat of Sioux County. Since 1970 the population has declined markedly from more than 1,100 residents, as people have left for other locations for work. The population was 176 at the 2020 census. History A primarily Native American settlement developed here after a US Army post at this site was established in 1863 as the Standing Rock Cantonment, intended for the US Army garrison to oversee the Hunkpapa and Blackfeet bands, and the Inhunktonwan and Cuthead of the Upper Yanktonai, of the Lakota Oyate. In 1878 the US Army renamed the fort to honor Captain George Yates, who was killed by the Lakota Oyate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The town that developed was also known as Fort Yates. Yates & Thom Ltd, or Yates of Blackburn, was a British manufacturer of stationary steam engines and boilers at the Canal Ironworks, Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The company had its origins in a blacksmith's shop started by William Yates in 1824. Leigh Spinners cross compound steam engine In the 1860s, the company supplied a cam operated, drop valve compound engine operating at 100 psi to the India Mill, Darwen. Other mills supplied by Yates and Thom included the Durban Mill, Oldham. This was an 1800 hp triple-expansion four-cylinder engine built in 1906. It had a 24" HP cylinder, a 29" IP cylinder and two 38" LP cylinders with a 5 ft 6 in stroke. At 180 psi, it drove a 27-ft, 67-ton flywheel with 38 ropes at 65 rpm. It used Corliss valves on all cylinders. An engine, one of a pair supplied by the firm, survives at Leigh Spinners. Yates Racing was an American stock car racing team that competed in NASCAR through the 2009 season, after which it merged into Richard Petty Motorsports. Previously known as Robert Yates Racing, the team was owned by Doug Yates, who has officially owned the team since his father Robert's retirement on December 1, 2007. Yates is a horticultural supply company primarily for the home gardening market in New Zealand and Australia. History Yates was founded in Auckland, New Zealand by Arthur Yates in 1883. In 1887, he opened a branch in Sussex St, Sydney, and left his brother, Ernest, in charge of the New Zealand store. They came to an agreement to run the stores separately until the 1980s, when the two companies joined together again. By 1893, Arthur started selling his seed packets for home gardeners. Yates began to sell other gardening items apart from seeds, and the range soon included fertiliser, sprays, pots, potting mix and tools. In 1895, the ''Yates Garden Guide'' was published, a basic gardening guide. The guide is still published today, after 110 years. Yates County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 24,774, making it the third-least populous county in New York. The county seat is Penn Yan.
