Yan Yuexian (), also romanised as Yang Yoo-yea, was a Chinese actress in the silent film industry in Shanghai Shanghai (; , , Standard Mandarin pronunciation: ) is one of the four direct-administered municipalities of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Her father made 103 films in addition to his writing and composing. Under her father's influence, she found she enjoyed music and painting. She made her first movie in 1926 as a "child actor" of about 15-years-old, having joined the drama association earlier in 1925. In her career Yan Yuexian participated in almost 50 films. The Young Companion
''The Young Companion'', known as ''Liángyǒu'' () in Chinese, was a pictorial with captions in both Chinese and English, published in Shanghai beginning February 1926. Although the direct translation of ''Liangyou'' is "Good Companion", the magazine bore the English name ''The Young Companion'' on the cover. Called an "iconic magazine" and "a visual shortcut for 'old Shanghai'", the magazine has proven useful in modern times to examine the glamorous side of colonial-era Shanghai. It may have been the most influential large-scale comprehensive pictorial in the 1920s, at least in Asia. It ceased publication in 1945.
