Yahor Lapo ( be, Ягор Лапо; born June 20, 1982 in Minsk) is a modern pentathlete from Belarus. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men's event, along with his compatriot Dzmitry Meliakh. During the competition, he finished in penultimate place, out of thirty-six competitors. The event is inspired by the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, traditional pentathlon held during the ancient Olympics. The modern pentathlon was first held in 1912, and its rules have changed several times over the years. The latest structure, as of the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2020 Olympics, consists of three separate events for fencing, swimming, and equestrian, which determine each athlete's starting time in the final event. The 2008 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the XXIX Olympiad () and also known as Beijing 2008 (), were an international multisport event held from 8 to 24 August 2008, in Beijing, China. The men's modern pentathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held on Thursday, August 21. Three venues were used: Olympic Green Convention Center (shooting and fencing), Ying Tung Natatorium (swimming), and the Olympic Sports Center Stadium (horse-riding and running). The Russians and Lithuanians continued to dominate the men's competition for the third consecutive time. Russia's Andrey Moiseev won the gold medal, and successfully defended his Olympic title, with score of 5,632 points. Dzmitry Meliakh ( be, Дзмітрый Мелях; born July 2, 1979, in Minsk) is a three-time Olympic modern pentathlete from Belarus. He first competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and achieved his best result in the men's event, with a score of 5,340 points, finishing in fifth place. Following his best result, he also won the gold medal at the 2006 UIPM World Cup no. 2 in Millfield, England, and bronze medals at the European Senior Championships Olympic Qualification in Riga, Latvia in the team relay event, and the 2006 UIPM World Cup no. 5 in Cairo, Egypt for the individual senior division.
