Yacyretá Island
Yacyretá Island (Spanish: ''Isla Yacyretá''; Guaraní: ''jasý retã'' "land of the Moon") is an island in the Itapúa Department, Paraguay, located in the Paraná River, sectioned by the Yacyretá Dam. Administratively, it is part of the southern province of Itapúa. It is known for its white sand dunes. It has a population of about 400 people who live mainly from fishing. Itapúa Department
Itapúa () is a department in the southern region of Paraguay. The capital is the city of Encarnación. It is divided into 30 districts, more than any other department in the country. History This department was created after the breakup of the Misiones Department, with the city of Encarnación as the capital. It had high economic growth in the first 30 years of the arrival of immigrants and the Carlos Antonio Lopez Railway; the growth was accompanied by several ups and downs. An era of decline followed until the 1950s when the Carnaval Encarnaceno became better known and attracted tourists from various regions. Yacyretá Dam
The Yacyretá Dam or Jasyretâ-Apipé Hydroelectric Power Station (from Guaraní ''jasy retã'', "land of the moon") is a dam and hydroelectric power plant built over the waterfalls of Jasyretâ-Apipé in the Paraná River, between the Paraguayan City of Ayolas and the Argentine Province of Corrientes. The dam is named for Yacyretá Island just upstream, much of which the dam submerged. The word "Yacyreta" is the Hispanicized spelling of the original Guaraní term Jasyretâ. The dam is long, and its installed equipment has a maximum power output of , with a record maximum annual power output of achieved in year 2012, and a maximum water flow rate of 55,000 cubic meters per second.
