Yacht Club Punta Ala is a yacht club in Punta Ala, Tuscany, Italy. On April 21, 1997, the club formally launched the challenge with the Luna Rossa boat, to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, holder of the America's Cup. Punta Ala
Punta Ala (formerly Punta Troia) is a ''frazione'' of the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy. The small town with a population of 402 people lies at the bottom of the northern hillsides of the promontory of the same name. The coastal town is a popular summer seaside destination. History Previously known as Punta Troia (derived from the Latin ''Port Traiani''), changed its name to Punta Ala (from aviation jargon, Ala means wing in Italian) after the Italian aviator Italo Balbo, who had purchased some fortifications and villas in the area which later became his residences. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, originally named Prada Challenge, then Luna Rossa Challenge, is an Italian sailboat racing syndicate first created to compete for the 2000 America's Cup. It won the Louis Vuitton Cup on its first attempt in 2000, but then lost the America's Cup match against the defending champion team, Team New Zealand. Luna Rossa challenged again for the 2003 America's Cup but was knocked out in the semi-finals stage of the Louis Vuitton Cup. In the 2007 America's Cup, held in Valencia, Spain, the team reached the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup but was again defeated by Team New Zealand. When the competition moved to AC72 catamarans for the 2013 America's Cup, held in San Francisco, Luna Rossa was the last team to challenge, entering a partnership with Team New Zealand. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is a New Zealand yacht club, and the club behind New Zealand's America's Cup campaigns, under the guises of New Zealand Challenge and Team New Zealand. It held the America's Cup from 1995 until 2003, becoming in 2000 the first non-American holder to successfully defend the trophy. Since Team New Zealand's victory in the 2017 event, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has held the America's Cup. On 21 March 2021, they beat Circolo della Vela Sicilia's Luna Rossa Challenge to again win the 2021 America's Cup.
