Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library
The Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library (Chinese: 新金山中文圖書館) is a public library in Ballarat, Victoria. It was founded in 2023 by Haoliang Sun and is located at 200 Sturt Street. Its collection includes over 200,000 Chinese-language books. History Founded by retired philosopher and educator Haoliang Sun, the Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library (Traditional Chinese: 新金山中文圖書館) was initially set up in a garage. Xin Jin Shan (Chinese: 新金山, ) was a term used by Chinese immigrants in the 1850s to refer to the Victorian goldfields. At one point, around a quarter of people in Ballarat were Chinese. Sun donated 10,000 books from the collection of his Mount Waverly Chinese bookshop, which closed 20 years ago, with the rest purchased or donated from universities, Chinese publishers and the Chinese Australian community. Guboo Ted Thomas
Edwin "Guboo" Ted Thomas (29 January 1909 – 19 May 2002), a Yuin man, was a prominent Aboriginal leader. He toured Australia with a gumleaf orchestra during the Great Depression of the 1930s, played rugby league and became a respected elder who campaigned for protection of sacred sites on the South Coast. He went to the United Nations in New York and urged the World Council of Churches to accept Indigenous religions, and also met the Dalai Lama. Early life Guboo Ted Thomas was born in 1909 under a gum tree at Jembaicumbene in the Braidwood area of the South Coast of New South Wales. He was born into the Yuin people, which he always maintained was a Nation made up of many individual tribes. Shen Jiawei
Shen Jiawei (born 1948) is a Chinese-Australian painter. He is a winner of the 2006 Sir John Sulman Prize. Life and work Shen Jiawei was born in Shanghai. He was in his final year of high school when the Cultural Revolution was launched in 1967. With the country's art universities closed, Jiawei instead chose to join the Red Guards and, later, the People’s Liberation Army. While in the PLA, he became a propaganda artist. He painted his best known work from this period, "Standing Guard for Our Great Motherland", while serving in Heilongjiang province in 1974. The piece was exhibited at the National Art Museum in Beijing later that year, where it received praise from Jiang Qing, the wife of Mao Zedong, and was subsequently shown in the Guggenheim Museum, both in New York City and Bilbao, in the China: 5000 Years exhibition, 1998. The ''Bencao gangmu'', known in English as the ''Compendium of Materia Medica'' or ''Great Pharmacopoeia'', is an encyclopedic gathering of medicine, natural history, and Chinese herbology compiled and edited by Li Shizhen and published in the late 16th century, during the Ming dynasty. Its first draft was completed in 1578 and printed in Nanjing in 1596. The ''Compendium'' lists the ''materia medica'' of traditional Chinese medicine known at the time, including plants, animals, and minerals that were believed to have medicinal properties. Li compiled his entries not only from hundreds of earlier works in the ''bencao'' medical tradition, but from literary and historical texts. He reasoned that a poem might have better value than a medical work and that a tale of the strange could illustrate a drug's effects.
