Xcellent
Xcellent (foaled 29 November 2001 in New Zealand) is a thoroughbred racehorse who was trained by Michael & Paul Moroney. He won 6 races from his first 9 career starts, including four Group Ones - The New Zealand Derby and New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie Racecourse, and the Mudgway Stakes and Kelt Capital Stakes at Hastings. On 1 November 2005, he ran third in the Melbourne Cup, behind three-time winner Makybe Diva. In early 2006, Xcellent damaged both front tendons and was out of action for 18 months before returning to the track in the 2007 Stradbroke Handicap and doing little on an unsuitably wet track under a large weight. Beginning another campaign in December 2007, he remained unbeaten in New Zealand in scoring a stunning win first up in the Group 3 Sir James Fletcher Stakes over 1600m at Ellerslie against a strong field including the likes of Sir Slick and fellow Derby winner Wahid. Kelt Capital Stakes
The Livamol Classic is a weight-for-age Thoroughbred horse race run at Hastings Racecourse in Hawke's Bay and was at one stage New Zealand's richest horse race. It is run at a distance of . The race is run in October. The weather in the Hawke's Bay's means the track conditions are usually excellent. The race is the part of the Triple Crown raced at Hastings Racecourse, along with the Tarzino Trophy, which was previously known as the Makfi Challenge Stakes or Mudgway Stakes, and the Arrowfield Stud Plate, which was previously known as the Windsor Park Plate, Stony Bridge Stakes and Horlicks Plate. Mudgway Stakes
The Tarzino Trophy also known as the Challenge Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run at Hastings Racecourse in Hawke's Bay and is New Zealand's first Group One race of the season. It is run over a distance of 1400m in September. The race is the first of the Hawkes Bay Triple Crown events and is followed by: * the 1600m Arrowfield Stud Plate in late September, and * the 2040m Livamol Classic in October. Michael Moroney (horseman)
Michael Denis Moroney (6 June 1958 – 27 February 2025) was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He was notable for having trained Brew to win the 2000 Melbourne Cup and many other Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Life and career Moroney's mother was the daughter of Charlie and Ellie Casey, the breeders of 1960 Melbourne Cup winner Hi Jinx. Michael's father, Denny, was also involved in the racing industry and he continued to assist Michael. Michael Moroney trained from the early 1980s on his own account but also in partnership with trainers including Dave and Paul O’Sullivan. His first Group 1 win was with Imperial Angel in the 1985 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton ridden by Jim Collett. The New Zealand Derby is a set-weights Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run over a distance of 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held in March each year. Pentire (12 April 1992 – 20 November 2017) was a British Thoroughbred Horse racing, racehorse and sire. Background Pentire was bred by Peter Wood, 3rd Earl of Halifax, Lord Halifax, he was purchased for 54,000 guineas by Mollers Racing, the racing stable Trust of brothers Eric B. Moller, Eric and Budgie Moller. Racing career Trained by Geoff Wragg, at age two Pentire's best result in a Conditions races, conditions race was a third in the Richmond Stakes. The Trentham Stakes is a Group 3 weight-for-age race held for thoroughbred racehorses at Trentham Racecourse near Wellington, New Zealand conducted by the Wellington Racing Club. The Zabeel Classic is a Group One Thoroughbred horse race run at weight-for-age over a distance of 2000 metres at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand.
