Xallas (river)
The Xallas is a river originating in smaller tributaries in Galicia, Spain close to Xallas. The river passes by close to Santa Comba and flows through several barrier lakes (Fervenz, Ponte Olveira, Castrelo, Santa Uxia). The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean close to the town of Ézaro. Ézaro
Ézaro (officially known as ''O Ézaro (Santa Uxía)'') is a parish part of the municipality of Dumbría, in the province of A Coruña, in the autonomous community of Galicia of northwestern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of Fisterra. It had a population of 600 inhabitants in 2019. Geography It is the only parish of the Dumbría municipality bordering the sea, the Atlantic Ocean. It is 100 kilometres away from A Coruña and it is located in the region called ''Costa da Morte''. The area of the parish is 13.2 km². It is crossed by the river Xallas, which flows into the sea in the waterfall called Fervenza do Ézaro. Nowadays the water flows permanently by the waterfall, while years ago it only happened during weekends (when the floodgates of the upstream dam were opened). The rivers of Galicia form part of a dense hydrography, hydrographical network in the Spain, Spanish autonomous community of Galicia (Spain), Galicia and has been described by Otero Pedrayo as “the land of a thousand rivers”. Most rivers are not deep enough to be navigable. However, small boats are sailed in the lower courses of the River Minho River, Minho and several others, as well as at many of the dams. The rivers flowing into the Bay of Biscay (Cantabrian Sea) tend to be very short. Those flowing into the Atlantic Ocean are only a little longer, except for the Minho (340 km) and the River Sil, Sil (225 km), whose lengths are several hundred kilometres. There are numerous rapids, due to the steep gradients of many river courses. In addition to river fishing, rivers have been used to power mills, and dams have been constructed to provide hydroelectric power and water storage.
