Wythenshawe FM
Wythenshawe FM 97.2, also known as WFM, is a community radio station broadcasting primarily to Wythenshawe, Manchester and the surrounding south Manchester area. It is recognised as the first station of its type in the UK, gaining a full-time licence in 2005 and is run entirely by volunteers. History The first iteration of Wythenshawe FM began on 25 May 2000. In 2014, Wythenshawe FM was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary service. In 2021, the station breached the conditions of its OFCOM license by failing to submit its financial reports on time. In October 2023, the station began broadcasting on DAB across south Manchester, Tameside, Stockport and the High Peak. In the United Kingdom, community radio refers to a system of licensing small, micro-local, non-profit radio stations, which started in 2002. In its early days, the pilot scheme was known as access radio. New legislation paved the way for this additional tier of radio, starting in 2005, and hundreds of community stations have since been set up. Unlike commercial radio licensing, which is generally advertised to cover a specific region, community radio stations are usually limited to broadcast areas smaller than commercial or BBC local stations, nominally within a radius of their transmitter. Wythenshawe
Wythenshawe () is an area of Manchester, England. Historically part of Cheshire, in 1931 Wythenshawe was transferred to the City of Manchester, which had begun building a large housing estate there in the 1920s. With an area of approximately , Wythenshawe became the largest council estate in Europe. Wythenshawe includes the areas of Baguley, Benchill, Peel Hall, Newall Green, Woodhouse Park, Moss Nook, Northern Moor, Northenden and Sharston. History The name Wythenshawe seems to come from the Old English ''wiðign'' = " withy tree" and ''sceaga'' = "wood" (compare dialectal word shaw).
