Wyld (crater)
Wyld is a lunar impact crater that is located on the Moon's far side, beyond the eastern limb. It lies in that portion of the lunar surface that is sometimes brought into view of the Earth under conditions of favorable libration and illumination, but even then the crater is seen from the edge and not much detail can be observed. Wyld lies to the northeast of the larger Hirayama and to the west of Saha. Attached to the northern outer rim is the small crater Fox Foxes are small-to-medium-sized omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a NASA robotic spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric Polar orbit, polar mapping orbit. Data collected by LRO have been described as essential for planning NASA's future human and robotic missions to the Moon. Its detailed mapping program is identifying safe landing sites, locating potential resources on the Moon, characterizing the radiation environment, and demonstrating new technologies. Launched on June 18, 2009, in conjunction with the LCROSS, Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), as the vanguard of NASA's Lunar Precursor Robotic Program, LRO was the first United States mission to the Moon in over ten years. Hirayama (crater)
Hirayama is a large lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon, just beyond the eastern limb. This region of the surface is sometimes brought into view from Earth during periods of favourable libration. However it is best viewed from orbit. This crater is located along the southeastern edge of the Mare Smythii, to the northeast of the crater Brunner. To the northeast of Hirayama is Wyld. On the west rim of Hirayama is the small, bright-rayed crater Bandfield. This is a worn and eroded crater with multiple impacts overlapping the outer rim and the interior floor. Hirayama K has broken across the rim to the southeast and Hirayama C crosses the northeastern rim. Along the southwestern outer edge is Hirayama Q. Fox (crater)
Fox is a small lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It is named after the American astronomer Philip Fox. It lies near the northern rim of the crater Wyld, and to the southeast of Babcock. This crater is bowl-shaped, with a roughly circular rim, simple sloping walls and a relatively level, featureless interior. There is some talus along the northern inner wall. Saha (crater)
Saha is a lunar impact crater on the Moon's far side, behind the eastern limb as seen from the Earth. It lies less than one crater diameter due east of the similar-sized Wyld, and to the north-northwest of the large walled plain Pasteur. This crater has been worn and damaged by subsequent impacts, including the satellite crater Saha W which lies across the northwest rim and inner wall. The inner sides still display some terrace-like shelf structures, but these have become worn and have lost definition. There is a small, bowl-shaped crater Saha M in the southwestern part of the interior floor. To the north of this feature is an arcing ridge feature. The floor is otherwise pitted by various tiny craterlets. This crater is a proposed site of Lunar Crater Radio Telescope along with Daedalus crater. Libration
In lunar astronomy, libration is the cyclic variation in the apparent position of the Moon that is perceived by observers on the Earth and caused by changes between the orbital and rotational planes of the moon. It causes an observer to see slightly different hemispheres of the surface at different times. It is similar in both cause and effect to the changes in the Moon's apparent size because of changes in lunar distance (astronomy), distance. It is caused by three mechanisms detailed below, two of which cause a relatively tiny physical libration via tidal forces exerted by the Earth. Such true librations are known as well for other moons with locked rotation. James Hart Wyld
James Hart Wyld (September 10, 1912 – December 1, 1953) was an American engineer and rocket scientist. James Hart Wild was born on September 10, 1912, in New York City. Recognizing him as a child prodigy, his parents hired private tutors and sent him to the Harvey prep school in Hawthorne, New York, the Salisbury boarding school in Connecticut, and Princeton University He completed his B.S. in mechanical engineering at Princeton University in 1935. Wyld's interest in rocketry began in 1934, with the reading of David Lasser's book, ''Conquest of Space'', and reports from the Cleveland Rocket Society of early rocket engine experiments. He learned of the American Interplanetary Society (later renamed the American Rocket Society), and applied for membership in March 1935.
