Wu Feng (engineer)
Wu Feng (born 12 June 1951) is a Chinese engineer who is a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Biography Wu was born in Beijing, on 12 June 1951. During the Down to the Countryside Movement, he was a sent-down youth in Shanxi. He received his bachelor's degree and master's degree from Taiyuan University of Technology in 1978 and 1981, respectively. He taught at Beijing Institute of Technology since 1982, what he was promoted to associate professor in 1986 and to full professor in 1991. In May 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctor of science from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Wu (surname)
''Wú'' is the pinyin transliteration of the Chinese surname 吳 (Simplified Chinese 吴), which is a common surname (family name) in Mainland China. The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE, ) is the national academy of the People's Republic of China for engineering. It was established in 1994 and is an institution of the State Council of China. Down To The Countryside Movement
The Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement, often known simply as the Down to the Countryside Movement, was a policy instituted in the People's Republic of China between mid 1950s and 1978. As a result of what he perceived to be pro-bourgeois thinking prevalent during the Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao Zedong declared certain privileged urban youth would be sent to mountainous areas or farming villages to learn from the workers and farmers there. In total, approximately 17 million youth were sent to rural areas as a result of the movement. Usually only the oldest child had to go, but younger siblings could volunteer to go instead. Chairman Mao's policy differed from Chinese President Liu Shaoqi's early 1960s sending-down policy in its political context. Shanxi (; ; formerly romanised as Shansi) is a landlocked province of the People's Republic of China and is part of the North China region. The capital and largest city of the province is Taiyuan, while its next most populated prefecture-level cities are Changzhi and Datong.
