Wu-Lu
Miles Romans-Hopcraft, known professionally as Wu-Lu, is a musician from Brixton, South London. He has self-released one album and two EPs, and released his first album with Warp Records, ''Loggerhead'', in 2022. His music covers a wide variety of genres, including several types of hip hop and rock, though he is most commonly associated with punk rock. Early life Miles Romans-Hopcraft was born and raised in Brixton, South London. His mother, Hopal Romans, is a lecturer and contemporary dancer, and an alum of the Alvin Ailey American Dance School. His father, Robin Hopcraft, is a trumpeter and co-founder of the London reggae fusion band Soothsayers. Romans-Hopcraft has a twin brother, Ben, who plays in the bands Childhood, Warmduscher, and Insecure Men. Both twins guested with their father's band as preteens, with Miles playing bass which is his primary instrument. Loggerhead (album)
''Loggerhead'' is the second album by South London musician Wu-Lu. It was released 8 July 2022 by Warp Records, and was his first with the label after releasing his debut album, ''Ginga'', independently in 2015. Writing and recording for the album began in London, though mainly took place in Norway. Musical collaborators include featured vocalists Asha Lorenz, Amon, Lex Amor, and Léa Sen, as well as Mica Levi, two members of the band Black Midi, and Wu-Lu's brother Benjamin Romans-Hopcraft. Five singles were released prior to the album, each with a music video directed by either Denisha Anderson or Ethan + Tom. The album was received positively by critics and was nominated for multiple awards by the American Association of Independent Music and the UK's Association of Independent Music. Roskilde Festival
The Roskilde Festival is a Danish music festival held annually south of Roskilde. It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries. It was created in 1971 by two high school students and a promoter. In 1972, the festival was taken over by the Roskilde Foundation, which has since run the festival as a non-profit organization for development and support of music, culture and humanism. In 2014, the Roskilde Foundation provided festival participants with the opportunity to nominate and vote upon which organizations should receive funds raised by the festival. Loud And Quiet
''Loud and Quiet'' is a British bi-monthly music magazine that focuses on new music from underground indie, alternative, electronic and hip hop artists. History and profile The magazine was founded in January 2005 by Stuart Stubbs as a home-printed fanzine in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. It relocated to London in 2006. Issue 01 of ''Loud And Quiet'' featured Pete Doherty on its cover. Only 150 copies were published in a home-made fanzine style and distributed through independent record shops and clothes shops in London, England. Turntablism
Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating new music, sound effects, mixes and other creative sounds and beats, typically by using two or more turntables and a cross fader-equipped DJ mixer. The mixer is plugged into a PA system (for live events) and/or broadcasting equipment (if the DJ is performing on radio, TV or Internet radio) so that a wider audience can hear the turntablist's music. Turntablists atypically manipulate records on a turntable by moving the record with their hand to cue the stylus to exact points on a record, and by touching or moving the platter or record to stop, slow down, speed up or, spin the record backwards, or moving the turntable platter back and forth (the popular rhythmic "scratching" effect which is a key part of hip hop music), all while using a DJ mixer's crossfader control and the mixer's gain and equalization controls to adjust the sound and level of each turntable. Dubstep
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the early 2000s. Grime Music
Grime is a genre of electronic music that emerged in London in the early 2000s. It developed out of the earlier UK dance style UK garage, and draws influences from jungle, dancehall, and hip hop. The style is typified by rapid, syncopated breakbeats, generally around 140 beats per minute, and often features an aggressive or jagged electronic sound. Emceeing is a significant element of the style, and lyrics often revolve around gritty depictions of urban life. Broken beat (sometimes referred to as "bruk") is an electronic dance music genre characterized by syncopated beats and tense rhythms, including staggered or punctuated snare beats and/or hand claps. It has been heavily influenced by styles such as jazz-funk and R&B. Artists in this area typically emerged from drum and bass, house, hip hop, techno or acid jazz scenes. UK Garage
UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals, and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular "2-step" rhythms. Drum And Bass
Drum and bass (also written as drum & bass or drum'n'bass and commonly abbreviated as D&B, DnB, or D'n'B) is a genre of electronic dance music characterized by fast breakbeats (typically 165–185 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines, samples, and synthesizers. Underground Music
