Wortham, Suffolk
Wortham is a village and parish in Suffolk, England, close to the border with Norfolk. Its church, St Mary the Virgin, lies about a mile north of the present-day village. It is one of 38 existing round-tower churches in Suffolk and the one with the greatest diameter in England. History In the time of Edward the Confessor Wortham consisted of two parishes, each with its own church and parsonage. They had of glebe between them and a combined value of seven shillings. After the Norman Conquest there were still two parishes, corresponding to the two Norman manors: Southmoor, held by the Abbots of Bury, and Eastgate (Wortham Hall) held by the Barons of Rye. In 1769 the parishes were combined under William Evans, Rector of Eastgate. The Saxon church in Southmoor disappeared and was never rebuilt, although the Rectory remained until 1785. Geography Wortham is located in the northwest corner of Freestone County at (31.788472, –96.462209). Texas State Highway 14 runs through town as Third Street, leading north to Richland and Interstate 45, and south to Mexia. Fairfield, the Freestone County seat, is to the southeast. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. Wortham lies near the highest point between Dallas and Houston, the nearby Tehuacana Hills. Wortham, Lifton
Wortham is an historic Manorialism, manor within the parish of Lifton, Devon, Lifton in Devon, England. The early sixteenth century manor house survives, today the property of the Landmark Trust. It was long the seat of the Dynham family, a junior branch descended from the Anglo-Norman magnate Baron Dynham. A mural monument survives in Lifton Church to John Dynham (d.1641) of Wortham, consisting of an escutcheon showing the arms of Dynham of Wortham impaling Harris of Hayne (''Sable, three crescents argent a bordure of the last)'') with the crest of Dynham above: ''An arm couped or hand azure holding a lock of hair sable'', with an inscribed tablet beneath.
