World Quizzing Championship
The World Quizzing Championships is an individual quiz contest organised by the International Quizzing Association (the umbrella organisation of various quizzing activities from more than 25 countries around the world). The competition has been staged annually since (since 2004 in more than one country simultaneously) with an increasing number of contestants from an increasing number of nations. Since 2006, the competition has been staged on the first Saturday of every June. As of 2024, Pat Gibson and Jesse Honey, hold the title for the highest-scoring quizzers with 186 out of 210 total points. (Although the quiz is out of 240, a player's lowest scoring round was dropped at the time Gibson and Honey played, and so their scores are out of 210 not 240). A quiz is a form of mind sport in which people attempt to answer questions correctly on one or several topics. Erik Derycke (quiz Player)
Erik Derycke (born 1970) is a Belgian quiz player best known for his success with the national team and his double gold at the European Quizzing Championships (EQC) 2007 with his partner Tom Trogh. Quiz He has been a national team member since 2003 when his team won the "England-Belgium interland", the precursor of the EQC. Derycke has won three European titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008, Silver in five other competitions and Bronze in 2011 with the national site. He also won the EQC double title with national teammate Tom Trogh (also from Leuven) in 2007, and Silver in 2011. The other two national players are Ronny Swiggers and Nico Pattyn. Dorjana Širola
Dorjana Širola (born 9 June 1972) is a Croatian quizzer, linguist, anglicist and software tester. She has been the highest placed woman at the World Quizzing Championship from 2005 to 2011, and again from 2013 to 2018 (losing out in 2012 to Anne Hegerty), with seven overall top 20 finishes during this period. She was also the winner of the BBC University Challenge (UC) quiz in 2002 as a member of the University of Oxford, Somerville College team and the winner of the University Challenge: The Professionals (UCP) quiz in 2006 as a member of the Bodleian Library team. She is the only person to have won both UC and UCP and the only person who has won University Challenge twice on two different teams. She also appeared on the BBC series Only Connect with a team called the 'Junipers'.
