World Porridge Making Championship
The World Porridge Making Championship has been running since 1994, giving a main prize of the "Golden Spurtle" trophy and the title "World Porridge Making Champion" for the best traditional porridge made with oatmeal, water and salt. A prize is also awarded for the best "Speciality" porridge which again is made with oatmeal and contenders can add their own ingredients. The competition takes place at the village hall in Carrbridge, in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. and is run by volunteers on behalf of the Carrbridge Community Council. It has taken place alongside World Porridge Day since 2009. Spurtle
The spurtle (or "spurtel", "spurtil", "spirtle", or "") is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the 15th century, that is used to stir porridge, soups, stews, and broths. The rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps, unlike a spoon, which would have a dragging effect during stirring. The low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument. Spurtles are made from wood, typically beech, cherry wood, or maple. They come in a range of sizes. Traditional spurtles have stylized thistles at the top, while modern ones often have a smooth taper. The custom is that a spurtle should be used to stir in a clockwise direction with the right hand. Carrbridge
Carrbridge ( sco, Carrbrig, gd, Drochaid Chàrr) is a village in Badenoch and Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands. It lies off the A9 on the A938, west of Skye of Curr and southeast of Tomatin, near Bogroy. It has the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands and the nearby ancient pine forest contains the Landmark Forest Adventure Park. Geography Carrbridge is about north of Aviemore and forms a gateway to the Cairngorms National Park. It was an early centre for skiing in Scotland. In the 2001 census the village had a population of 708 people, with the majority employed in tourism. Until the construction of a bypass in the 1980s, the A9 ran straight through the village. Cairngorms National Park
Cairngorms National Park ( gd, Pàirc Nàiseanta a' Mhonaidh Ruaidh) is a national park in northeast Scotland, established in 2003. It was the second of two national parks established by the Scottish Parliament, after Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, which was set up in 2002. The park covers the Cairngorms range of mountains, and surrounding hills. Already the largest national park in the United Kingdom, in 2010 it was expanded into Perth and Kinross. Roughly 18,000 people reside within the 4,528 square kilometre national park. The largest communities are Aviemore, Ballater, Braemar, Grantown-on-Spey, Kingussie, Newtonmore, and Tomintoul. World Porridge Day
World Porridge Day event in Scotland in 2023 World Porridge Day, on 10 October, is an international event related to porridge. The first of the days was held in 2009. The event is organized to raise funds for the charity Mary's Meals, based in Argyll, Scotland, to aid starving children in developing countries. The organization "feeds the nutrient-rich maize-based porridge Likuni Phala." The 2009 day included gatherings in the United States, France, Malawi, Bosnia and Sweden. In 2009 the organisation was feeding over 300,000 children a day. By 2023 the number of children fed every day had grown to over two million. Before 2023 it cost about £15 per child per year. At the start of 2023 the cost had to rise to over £19 - the biggest rise ever. Jodrell Bank Centre For Astrophysics
The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester, is among the largest astrophysics groups in the UK. It includes the Jodrell Bank Observatory, the MERLIN/VLBI National Facility, and the Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre. The centre was formed after the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST which brought two astronomy groups together. The Jodrell Bank site also hosts the headquarters of the SKA Observatory (SKAO) - the International Governmental Organisation (IGO) tasked with the delivery and operation of the Square Kilometre Array, created on the signing of the Rome Convention in 2019.
