Woolmark is a wool industry certification mark used on pure wool products that meet quality standards set by The Woolmark Company. It is a trade mark owned by The Woolmark Company, which has since 2007 been a subsidiary of Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI). The logo was launched in 1964 by the Woolmark Company under its previous name, the International Wool Secretariat. History The Woolmark logo was developed by the International Wool Secretariat (IWS), which had been founded in 1937. The logo was launched in August 1964 by IWS, then under the control of two Australians, chairman William Archer (Bill) Gunn (1914-2003) and William Vines (1916-2011) as managing director. The International Wool Secretariat (IWS) was formed in 1937 to promote the sale of wool on behalf of woolgrowers and review research carried out by independent bodies such as the Wool Industries' Research Association at Torridon, Headingley Lane, Leeds, England.Wool Secretariat ''Evening Post'', Volume CXXIV, Issue 113, 9 November 1937, Page 11 IWS was formed by the Wool Boards of Australian Wool Board, Australia, New Zealand Wool Board, New Zealand and South African Wool Board, South Africa, and funded by levies on wool grown in those countries. William Archer Gunn
William Archer (Bill) Gunn (1914—2003), later Sir William Gunn, was an Australian grazier and wool industry leader. Among other industry roles, he was a long serving chairman of the Australian Wool Board. He is associated with the Australian Wool Reserve Price Scheme, an eventually disastrous market intervention in the global wool market that he championed, which operated between 1970 and 1991. He was also associated with the successful international marketing of wool and Woolmark logo. Early years and family context Gunn was born on 25 February 1914, at Goondiwindi, Queensland.
