Woodmont Academy
Woodmont Academy was a private school in Howard County, Maryland, affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ, a Catholic religious institute. History Woodmont Academy was founded in 1995 by the Legionaries of Christ in Granite, Baltimore County, Maryland. There were 49 students in the first class. Plans to relocate to Glenwood were cancelled in 2000 when local residents objected. The school chose an alternate site in Cooksville, to which it relocated in 2003 over similar local opposition. In 2010, the Vatican condemned Marcial Maciel, the former leader of the Legion, for molesting underage males and fathering at least one child of a student. Due to declining enrollment (falling from 301 to 160 in two years), economic conditions, and fallout from the Legion of Christ controversy, Woodmont Academy closed on June 10, 2011, after the 2010–11 school year. Al Huda School is a private Islamic school in College Park, Maryland. It first opened in September 1995 with elementary students in Kindergarten through second grade. In Fall 2007, the high school opened. Currently, it has grades K–12, with boys and girls in separate classes. it had over 700 students in all programs, with 460 students in its day school. In 2013 the school and its affiliated mosque planned a new campus in the former Woodmont Academy in Cooksville, Western Howard County. Several area residents objected to the redevelopment plan proposed to the county government on the grounds that it would interfere with the area's rural character. In 2013, former James N. Marcial Maciel
Marcial Maciel Degollado (March 10, 1920 – January 30, 2008) was a Mexican Catholic priest who founded the Legion of Christ and the Regnum Christi movement. He was general director of the Legion from 1941 to 2005. Throughout most of his career, he was respected within the church as "the greatest fundraiser of the modern Roman Catholic church" and as a prolific recruiter of new seminarians. Late in his life, Maciel was revealed to have been a longtime drug addict who sexually abused at least 60 boys and young men in his care. After his death, it came to light that he had also maintained sexual relationships with at least four women, one of whom was a minor at the time. He fathered as many as six children, two of whom he is alleged to have sexually abused.
