Wolverhampton Tramways Company
Wolverhampton Tramways Company operated a tramway service in Wolverhampton between 1878 and 1900. History The Wolverhampton Tramways Order 1877 authorised the Wolverhampton Tramways Company to construct a horse-drawn tramway in Wolverhampton. The company developed three routes from Queen Street in Wolverhampton * Tettenhall * Willenhall * Bilston and Moxley. The company bought Landore-Siemens Steel Company rails from Swansea, and laid them on patent chairs by Mr. Kincaid C.E., who was the engineer to the company. The 1,800 tons of rails were paved on either side with 10,000 tons of granite sets from Mount Sorrell and the Clee Hills. The cost of laying the rails was about £50,000 and £10,000 was needed for yards, stabling, horses and tramcars. The company bought a mixture of tramcars, some from H. Major-General Charles Scrope Hutchinson (8 August 1826 – 29 February 1912) was Chief Inspecting Officer for Railways from 1892 to 1895. Family Hutchinson was born in Hythe, Kent, son of Scrope Hutchinson, M.D. He was educated at University College School from 1839 to 1841. He was married on 6 January 1852 in Gibraltar to Christina Ross, youngest daughter of William Ross of Gibraltar. The Black Country Living Museum (formerly the Black Country Museum) is an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings in Dudley, West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. It is located in the centre of the Black Country, west of Birmingham. The museum occupies of former industrial land partly reclaimed from a former railway goods yard, disused lime kilns, canal arm and former coal pits. Wolverhampton Corporation Tramways operated a tramway service in Wolverhampton between 1902 and 1928. History On 1 May 1900, for the sum of £26,750, Wolverhampton Corporation bought the Wolverhampton Tramways Company which had operated a standard gauge horse-drawn tramway since 1878. At the start of operation, the drivers and conductors were equipped with a coat and trousers of blue cloth with orange piping, and a peaked “W.C.T.” cap. A modernisation scheme followed immediately re-gauging to 3'6" and electrification. The tramway was unique in using the Lorain stud contact system, and because of this, connections to other networks in the area could not be made until 1921, when the council decided to convert to overhead wiring.
