The Ironwood Lumberjacks are a junior ice hockey team in the Superior International Junior Hockey League based in Ironwood, Michigan. The team was established as an expansion team based in Spooner, Wisconsin in the 2019–20 SIJHL season. The team relocated to Ironwood ahead of the 2024–25 SIJHL season where they will play their home games in the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center, which opened in 2020. Ironwood, Michigan
Ironwood is a city in Gogebic County, Michigan, Gogebic County in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, about south of Lake Superior. The city is on U.S. Route 2 in Michigan, US Highway 2 across the Montreal River (Wisconsin-Michigan), Montreal River from Hurley, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost city in Michigan, situated on the same line of longitude (90.2 degrees West) as Clinton, Iowa and St. Louis, Missouri. The Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) is a junior A ice hockey league and a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and Hockey Canada. The league operates in the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Junior Ice Hockey
Junior hockey is a level of competitive ice hockey generally for players between 16 and 21 years of age. Junior hockey leagues in the United States and Canada are considered amateur (with some exceptions) and operate within regions of each country. Spooner is a city in Washburn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,573 at the 2020 census. The city is located mostly within the southwest corner of the Town of Spooner, with a small portion extending into the Town of Beaver Brook on the south, the Town of Bashaw on the southwest, and the Town of Evergreen on the west. The 2024–25 SIJHL season is the 23rd season of the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL). League changes The Wisconsin Lumberjacks relocated from Spooner, Wisconsin, to Ironwood, Michigan, and were renamed the Ironwood Lumberjacks. Dean Thibodeau was appointed as the new league commissioner following the departure of Darrin Nicholas, who held the role since 2020. The Thunder Bay North Stars are a junior A ice hockey team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. They are a member of the Superior International Junior Hockey League. History After the fall of the Thunder Bay Flyers in 2001, the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) was founded. The Thunder Bay Wolves, who had played for a short while in the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League, were a founding team, but after one season they changed their name to the Fort William Wolves. Fort William is one of the original names of the city of Thunder Bay. After two rather average seasons, the team rebranded as the North Stars.
