Winter Sports Complex Ashgabat
Winter Sports Complex () is a multi-use indoor arena in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It is one of the largest ice hockey arenas in the Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS. Overview Construction of a new Ice Palace began in 2009. Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a contract worth 134.4 million euros with the Turkish company "Polimeks". The arena is located at the corner of Atatürk and Oguzhan street. Holds 10,000 spectators. In the center are gyms, recreational areas for athletes and spectators, cafés and other facilities. The total area of the new sports facility is 107,000 square meters. In the center of the palace housed the ice arena measuring 60 by 30 meters. Construction was completed in October 2011. The official opening took place on 19 October and was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Independence of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat (Turkmen language, Turkmen: ''Aşgabat'') is the capital city, capital and largest city of Turkmenistan. It lies between the Karakum Desert and the Kopet Dag, Kopetdag mountain range in Central Asia, approximately 50 km (30 mi) away from the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The city has a population of 1,030,063 (2022 census). Turkmenistan Men's National Ice Hockey Team
The Turkmenistan national ice hockey team () is the national men's ice hockey team of Turkmenistan. The team is controlled by the Turkmenistan Ice Hockey Federation (; TŞHF) and a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Turkmenistan is currently ranked 49th in the IIHF World Ranking and made its debut in the 2018 World Championship Division III Qualification tournament. Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow (born 29 June 1957) is a Turkmen politician and former dentist who is currently the chairman of the People's Council of Turkmenistan. He previously served as the second president of Turkmenistan from 2006 to 2022, when he entered into a power-sharing arrangement with his son, Serdar, the current president. A former dentist, Berdimuhamedow served in the government of the president, Saparmurat Niyazov, as the minister of health in 1997 and as the third vice president in 2001. Ice hockey is a minor sport that is gaining popularity in Turkmenistan. History Ice hockey never gained popularity in independent post-Soviet Turkmenistan until the president Saparmurat Niyazov ordered the construction of an Ice Palace in the desert foothills of the Kopet Dag.
