Winsome Earle-Sears
Winsome Earle-Sears (born March 11, 1964) is an American politician, businesswoman, and Marine Corps veteran serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Virginia since 2022. A member of the Republican Party, she is Virginia's first female lieutenant governor and the first woman of color to hold statewide office in Virginia. Born in Jamaica, Earle-Sears immigrated to the United States in 1970. She served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2004. She also served on the Virginia Board of Education, and ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 3rd congressional district in 2004 and for U.S. Senate in 2018. In 2021, Earle-Sears was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia, narrowly defeating Democratic nominee Hala Ayala. The lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia is a constitutional officer of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The lieutenant governor is elected every four years along with the governor and attorney general. 2025 Virginia Gubernatorial Election
The 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election will be held on November 4, 2025, to elect the governor of Virginia. Incumbent Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin is ineligible to run for re-election, as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the state's governors from serving consecutive terms. Former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger is the Democratic nominee, and Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears is the Republican nominee. Hala Sophia Ayala (born April 23, 1973) is an American politician who served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the 51st district from 2018 to 2022. She was the Democratic nominee in the 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election, narrowly losing to Republican nominee Winsome Earle-Sears. The 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 2021, to elect the next lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term, but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
