Windmill Scene
The Windmill scene is a musical scene that originated around the Windmill pub in Brixton, London, during the late 2010s and early 2020s. The term is usually defined with a blend of experimental rock and post-punk, featuring erratic, spoken vocals as well as inspiration from genres such as progressive rock and post-rock. A key figure on the scene's formation is producer Dan Carey, who signed many Windmill bands to his record label, Speedy Wunderground, which has also given it the name Speedy scene. Among the bands described as being part of the scene are Black Midi, Black Country, New Road, Squid, Shame, Maruja, the Last Dinner Party, Fat White Family, Heartworms, Goat Girl, PVA and occasionally, Fontaines D.C. Brexit (, a portmanteau of "Britain" and "Exit") was the Withdrawal from the European Union, withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU). Brexit officially took place at 23:00 GMT on 31 January 2020 (00:00 1 February 2020 Central European Time, CET). Maruja (band)
Maruja () are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 2014, currently signed to Music for Nations. Their most recent line-up consists of Harry Wilkinson (lead vocals, guitar), Joe Carroll (saxophone, vocals), Matt Buonaccorsi (bass) and Jacob Hayes (drums). The band gained attention through their EPs ''Knocknarea'' (2023) and ''Connla's Well'' (2024), combining elements of post-rock, jazz-rock and noise rock. History 2014–2019: Formation and early years Prior to the formation of the band, Harry Wilkinson and Matt Buonaccorsi were childhood friends and both attended The Manchester College. Together with guitarist Liam Laurence and a drummer, the group formed Maruja in 2014. The band's name was inspired by a store sign that Wilkinson saw during a family holiday in Spain. ''Schlagenheim'' is the debut studio album by English rock band Black Midi, released on 21 June 2019 through Rough Trade Records. The band recorded the majority of the album over a five-day period with producer Dan Carey at his studio in South London. Throughout its recording, the band made the conscious decision not to replicate their live set, embellishing their four-piece setup with synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines, banjos and organs. ''Schlagenheim'' received praise from music critics, being nominated for the 2019 Mercury Prize and appearing inside the top-ten of several year-end lists. It also peaked at number 43 on the UK Albums Chart. The Official Albums Chart is the United Kingdom's industry-recognised national record chart for album, albums. Entries are ranked by sales and audio streaming. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on ''UKChartsPlus'' as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. ''Ants from Up There'' is the second studio album by the British rock band Black Country, New Road, released on 4 February 2022 on Ninja Tune. Recorded at Chale Abbey on the Isle of Wight, the album was produced by the band's live sound engineer Sergio Maschetzko, and is the final album to feature lead vocalist and guitarist Isaac Wood, who announced his departure from the band four days prior to the album's release. Written during COVID-19 lockdowns and road-tested during brief touring stints in support of their debut album, '' For the First Time'' (2021), the album was released almost exactly a year after their debut, and was preceded by four singles: "Chaos Space Marine", "Bread Song", "Concorde" and "Snow Globes". The Independent
''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper.
