Windenburg was a rather typical small castle in Dreischor, the Netherlands . Castle Characteristics Phase 1: a strong small castle The Windenburg was a castle of a peculiar form. The floor plan and depictions give the impression of a single round tower house. However, archaeological investigations showed that in its first phase, the circular structure had an inner courtyard. Therefore, the castle was a very small water castle. It consisted of a ring wall of about 17.5 m diameter, a gatehouse at the front, and a wing with some rooms built alongside the wall in the back. The early 19th-century cadastre map shows that it was surrouned by a moat of about 20 m wide. At the foundation level the ring wall was 2.45 m thick, which was very thick for a wall, but also for a tower house. The ring wall, gate house and habitation wing were built as one structure. Sint-Maartensdijk is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Tholen, and lies about 16 km west of Bergen op Zoom. History Sint-Maartensdijk was founded as 'Haestinge', and renamed when it got a church dedicated to Martin of Tours. Adolph I of Cleves (german: Adolf I) (2 August 1373 – 23 September 1448) was the second Count of Cleves and the fourth Count of Mark. Life He was the son of Adolph III, Count of Mark, and Margaret of Jülich (and thus the brother of Margaret of Cleves). After his father's death in 1394, he became Count of Cleves. In 1397 he defeated his uncle William VII of Jülich, 1st Duke of Berg in the battle of Kleverhamm and became Lord of Ravenstein.
